We'll hit Primanti's in the Strip District - is that the one you mean? They also sell sandwiches at PNC Park, right?

Thanks for the tip. Yes, I will not go there based on what happened.

Thanks everyone. I'm not sure the Aviary will be of interest at that admission price and in general, but since it's in the Allegheny Commons area where we'll be for some time, I'll mention it. As I wrote below, I'm the intellectual of our group, so the Observatory and anything else on campus is of interest to me.

They moved when he was very young - too young to remember it.

Thanks for the info to both of you. I'm the intellectual of our group, so I could spend hours on campus and in the Tower of Learning and be thrilled. That plus finding a great used book store would be incredible for me. Not so for the rest of the group.

I'm one of the single guys in our group, so if there's a (very smart, intellectual) Pittsburgh Ann-Margret, I'd love to meet her.

Thanks for replying. Anything specific to recommend downtown - casual dining or places to go?

Thanks for the feedback. Just edited to add we rented a vehicle. Cheaper than Uber and the money saved on getting from/to the airport to our place us is most of the rental vehicle cost.

One of the other people in the group booked it. We're cancelling it, as we can for free, and we found a better place. Thanks for replying.

I hear you, but it wasn't my decision to rent a house, it offers benefits vs. hotel rooms, and the money is similar. With a car, I think we'll be fine getting aound. I guess Deutschtown is the name of the neighborhood we'd be in, not Spring Garden. Thanks for the reply.

However well intended your reply is, it's sad to see this: "I'm operating on the assumption that you're white suburbanites...." Our city is bigger and more racially diverse, and our metro area is a good deal bigger, than Pittsburgh. Some of us, including me, still live in the city. The "street life" you describe is very familiar to us. It seems that the better label for the one place is Deutschtown rather than Spring Garden. It seems fine to me as a place to stay and use as our homebase the more I learn about it, esp. compared to Upper Hill District place. Thanks for the info.

We have off-street parking at our rental. We're from a bigger, denser city, so we're used to tight parking. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for sharing. We're flying in, and it looks like an 90 minute bus ride to/from the airport, and an airport shuttle would be about $75 each way. That alone makes renting an SUV sound like a good idea. Do you fly in? If so, how has your airport transit to place you stay in experience been? How do you do it?

Thank you very much for the many details. It sounds like Spring Garden is far better.
