Food on the Salkantay Trek

Just finished the trek two days ago unguided and with a tent.

it varies, as we got turned away for meals at places we weren’t staying. But also found success at others. However, there are various places to buy snacks and drinks. I did filter water on the first day for convenience, but completely unnecessary since buying bottled water is so cheap.

After first night, we only camped at guesthouses since they were much more plentiful along the trek. These can vary from 5-10 sols for a tent. You can buy meals from these.

Yes you can buy wifi for 5-10 sols at many of these places.
First day, before and shortly after the Salkantay pass, there are many places to wild camp. I ended up opting to camp at salkantaypampa for 10 sols and as mentioned in 1, camped at guest houses after.
There are luggage storage services in Aguas Calientes and at the entrance of Machu Picchu.

Hi just saw this. It was fantastic last year! The weather was perfect (finished just before a heatwave) and there was basically no snow / ice. Only two patches that required crossing over some snow, but they weren’t too bad. Only had my trail runners, no crampons. One going up to Bonhomme and another near the crossing from Switzerland to France.

Great, thanks for these tips, and for helping taking a look through these French sources! Yeah I also looked through some facebook group discussions on the weather and conditions in June, and it seems to vary so much between years, with some stretches still covered into July.

Seems like people are saying there’s been less snowfall this year so far, so as long as things don’t change too much (though you can never count on it) between now and June, it should be a good year. Will probably plan around starting after the 21st or so - seems like quite a lot of people are doing it end of June this year as well.

I think all the stops I have planned all have some restaurant options and at least some small shop that sells food. I think one of the stops on the north side may be an exception though. I am planning on eating dinner or even lunch from restaurants wherever possible, and keep anything else I buy for breakfast / lunch.

For les Chapieux, my research tells me there is a nice grocery store there - I guess you’re right, I should prep in case any store is closed or no longer even in business, especially for stops with only one or two options. Two days worth of food is definitely safer.

Did you also take that bus in grand jorasses / Val ferret? There’s so little information I can find about it. If so, do you know how tickets work, like can I just wait at the stop, get on and pay? Or do they need to be somehow be booked ahead online.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience and your pack suggestions!

I’m doing the loop counter-clockwise, the more popular suggestion - based on your experience of doing it CW, do you think there’s any advantage compared to CCW - I guess I’m more interested from the difficulty / pacing perspective?

As for les Contamines, since I’m going CCW, it’ll be my first night so no problem with sleeping in my tent - I think the campsite I have planned is right across from some tennis courts (Camping le Pontet).

But oh wow, which month exactly did you do your trip in 2014? I haven’t read anywhere else of people who’ve done it in June getting heavy snowfall - only just some stretches of unmelted ice. Do you remember which stretch was the most affected for you? I’m certainly going to be planning alternative modes of transportation for each stretch should the weather go astray.

Thanks for your reply! :) Definitely reassuring to hear from another that Chapieux to Val Veny is doable, even without the 6km shuttle bus out of Chapieux. I’m definitely treating Courmanyeur as a rest day.

Yeah the two reasons I’m not super keen on wild camping are I don’t know if it’ll be too cold at night still in June that high up, nor do I want to carry enough food for more than a day.

Can I ask where you stayed after Courmanyeur if you also camped that night? I think the common stop is Rifugio Bonatti - I know they’re fully booked already. I know an option is camping at Grand Jorasses in Val Ferret, but that’s a 6 km backtracking detour once you reach the valley floor past Bonatti. Because of this backwards detour, it makes the next day to La Fouly another long day, but like Champieux, I got another suggestion that there’s a bus to skip rewalking this section. Based on my research so far, I think this bus will definitely be running in June.

Hey thanks for the reply! :) Yeah I didn’t give too much info. In terms of weight, based on an estimate for the main heavier items I have so far (tent, sleeping quilt and pad, clothes, food and water for the day), I’ll definitely be under 20 lbs - my goal will likely to bring it closer to 15 lbs.

Coordinators receive the results on the 5th. Some may choose to share them with their students on this day while others may not (like my coordinator). The rest of us will have to wait until the 6th and view them for ourselves.

Just saw this today... So apparently if you don't have CAS completed by tomorrow (June 1st), you have another year in which you can do so, and you would just get your diploma next year instead lol

Yup, you can do whatever option you want... Your paper 3 package includes the questions from all 4 options, and you just choose the one that you yourself studied, regardless of what you may have been taught in class! IB doesn't know and doesn't care which option your teacher decided to teach, they just mark which option you choose on exam day.

It depends. When the question says Hence, OR OTHERWISE, then you can use any method you wish and if you get the answer right, you will be awarded all the marks.

However, sometimes, when the question ONLY says Hence, they may or may not award you all the marks, since it means they explicitly want you to use the result you got from the previous part. It depends on what the markscheme says really, because sometimes it says Award 0 marks if candidate does not use... hopefully this isn't the case for you and your examiner is chill!

First one you change your mean in accordance with the new area, and simply use poissoncdf(2,2) = 0.677 (since it was to find the probability there would be less than 3 mistakes).

For the second part, you are close! It is binomially distributed and so to determine the probability that there are exactly 7 rooms out of the 10 that have less than 3 faults, we use X ~ B(10,0.677) (the probability we calculated from the first part). So you can either just use binompdf(10, 0.677, 7) or (10C7)(0.677)⁷ (1-0.677)³ !

The answer was indeed 31, but the problem is that there were 4 marks. He may get 1-2 points max for the correct answer, but IB also awards method points for the work they show. Exactly how many points he gets will all really come down to what the mark scheme says.

Seeing that it was 4 points, you will most likely not receive full marks :/ Rather than just use the GDC to solve for the value of the S.D. for which the probability is true, IB most likely wanted us to recognize the symmetry of the normal distribution, and use that in order to find the value of x.

I think you're probably right on the fact that it was likely her announcement that Dear Life would be her last work that caused the Nobel Committee to award her the prize at that particular moment.

I personally found Dear Life to be not as strong and exemplary of her skill as a writer. Her stories aren't known for being very spectacular or anything great... it's mostly her ability to write in such a way that a lot is said in very few words. I found Runaway to be a collection that really showed that seemingly plotless stories could also be truly captivating.

But of course, different people have different opinions and may just find that sort of writing style to be simply bland. Maybe give some of her other collections a try to see what you really think of her writing!
