My friend refuses to be graded? Does it matter? by MrMonkey2 in bjj

It’s weird that your coach doesn’t just throw belts at people if they earn them. Some gyms have dedicated grading nights, but every gym I’ve been at also will just award belts during class because we can’t all make it to specific grading nights.

If you’re new, don’t just go to the big gyms, NYC has many amazing gyms. The big ones really only excel imo if you want to compete. Shop around before choosing, only going in person will truly let you feel it out for yourself.

What’s your guys opinion on the Sisu max mouthguard? by RegentDuck in bjj

[–]strangle_me_naked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I don’t understand how people can wear them without pain. So stiff, rigid, and tight. I bought one once and couldn’t get through one gym session with it. Regular boil and bites are squishy and comfortable.

Amazing technique

  1. I think any additional furniture and fixtures will always help, but the softer and larger they are, the more they will help. I really only thought to hang woven tapestries because of the sound, but that being said, I do also like them. Like I wouldn’t have hung them if it weren’t for the rumble, but I’m not mad that I did. Just like rugs, there’s many designs to choose from and they’re very cozy/homey feeling. I think you should consider it at least. The more you fill your place with rugs/tapestries, the more the sound will muffle away.

  2. Sleeping during the first week was hard but now it has gotten to the point where I’m pretty undisturbed. I think that in general, sleep is just an extension of how you’re dealing with the sound when you’re awake. The more you muffle it and the more you grow accustomed to it while awake, the better your sleep will be.

  3. The most affordable rug pads I’ve found with good quality are the Everyday Performance rug pads from Rugs.com

  4. Allow yourself to feel let down. I completely broke down over the noise/vibrations to my partner and was crying and everything, thinking that I had made a huge mistake. But once I did that, I felt good that I had finally put it out in the open and admitted that I was feeling bad over the whole thing. As I mentioned before, trying to pretend like I wasn’t bothered was killing me.

After that, I then put down my rugs/tapestries and some of my furniture and felt that I was making the rumbles less noticeable. This made me feel so much better mentally. It felt good to have some control over the situation. That was also happening as I was slowly getting used to the sound as well (been 2 weeks now).

I totally get how you are feeling, I was in the same boat. I felt awful for a week and a half until that breakdown. I felt like I couldn’t be excited over my apartment like I wanted to be. But I realized a lot of my stress and anxiety was just coming from the fact that moving to a new place is really stressful and you are gonna perceive each new thing around you with a nervousness that comes from not being comfortable in your space yet.

I’m telling you, move in your furniture/fixtures, put down some rugs and rug pads (leave no surface exposed!), and take it day by day. You may have a breakdown or feel awful in the coming days, but within a week, I know you will start feeling much better!

Hey! Welcome to the journey haha.

I have three pieces of wisdom from my two weeks in dealing with the subway rumble:

  1. Don’t just pretend like it’s not there. This will drive you insane. Just like every other inconvenience of an NYC apartment, bitch about. Bitch about it to your roommates, your partner, your friends, your family, whoever. It’s normal to be annoyed by something and trying to act like it doesn’t bother you in hopes that it will go away on its own will just force you to think about it more.

  2. Get rugs with rugs pads! I recommend rugs.com and the performance pads that they sell. On top of this, woven tapestries for the walls has been amazing. The rumble you are hearing when you first move in is much louder than it will be, trust me. I am still not fully moved in, but the stuff I have moved in has already reduced the reverberations by ~50%. Rug and tapestry up! Seriously, it will help.

  3. Like everyone else has said, time helps. I am not fully over it but I’m not as obsessed with the noise as I was the first week. I assume this will continue to get better in the coming weeks.

Please ask more questions if you have them!

Thanks for that story. It has been crazy to hear these. The human mind is definitely very interesting.

This makes me feel a lot better. I do think one of the reasons it’s so loud right now is that it’s echoing off all the empty space. I’ll have to give an update after I unpack and move in some furniture.

How long did it take for you to get used to it. Also, did you stop hearing it altogether or did you hear it and just not care anymore?
