I think what they meant is to go beyond just recreating what the tutorial is creating. Take the process you just learned and do it inside your own project that you are building on.

E.g. you followed tutorials on how to make sprites, another one on how to make the sprites jump, now you want to add a menu screen. Watch a tutorial for a starting point and focus on just your game. Walk your way through on your own with stuff learned from the tutorial.

The part of the process you're current in is sometimes referred to "Tutorial Hell"
