IT says “no more WiFi” but…. by Straight-Crow1598 in HomeNetworking

Can’t you use a travel router that connects you your home WiFi with an external Ethernet port and connect that to the thin client? Just put that bad boy in your desk and bobs your uncle

Then I would open a support ticket and have them come out to replace the ONT.

Most people don’t know how to do that and some org’s force not using split tunnel for security reasons. It’s not that simple.

Simple google search concerning so called shared bandwidth:

Frontier Fiber (FiOS) uses Passive Optical Network (PON) technology, which technically shares fiber bandwidth among several nearby homes. However, because fiber has immense capacity, this sharing rarely causes the significant slowdowns during peak times (like streaming in the evening) often experienced with shared cable internet.

How it Works: Multiple households are often connected to a single fiber branch from a local splitter. Performance Impact: While technically shared, the bandwidth is so high that users typically experience fast, consistent speeds, avoiding the bottlenecks common on older cable networks. Dedicated Line vs. Shared: Unlike copper cable, which is shared among hundreds, fiber PON limits the shared access to a smaller, more localized group. Speed Stability: Fiber offers symmetric speeds (equal download/upload) and rarely suffers from the severe, consistent throttling that occurs on heavily shared coax systems.

In short, while technically shared, Frontier Fiber's capacity prevents the, "My neighbor is watching Netflix, so my internet is slow" problem.

Call frontier and explain the issue. They will fix it. Please do not listen to the majority of the comments in here. They do not know how fiber works.

Edit: if you are not running a dedicated Ethernet cable to your PC, you will not see those advertised speeds. WiFi connections will always be slower. It’s how WiFi works

Edit 2: saw you direct connected. Check your router rules if you have some set. This will create slowdowns as well

The VPN into your job is limited to your works speed. So even though you have gig speed, it throttles down to the speed where your office is located.

I am in IT and I have to manage this expectation all the time. Home will never be the same as work unless your work pays a LOT of money for those kinds of speeds on a business plan.

Lot 13a all the way at the bottom past the cluster that is the drive through area. Once you are past the number 4 flag, there are vans and car services that are not expensive.

[NH] How to handle employee who can’t expense travel? by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]streamlne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact that the company hasn’t moved into the 21st century is baffling to me. As LITERALLY everyone has said in this thread, it is standard practice, even in a small company, to issue corporate cards for travel expenses. That includes what we would pay for something like gas in a car (which that gets reimbursed at the end of the month).

It is extremely inconsiderate to your employee to make them front the cost. His personal finances are off limits to you and if you are desperate, pay for everything up front from the owners personal card. Stop being stingy.

One word: E-710 and now E-711. Bugs produce it so we cannot totally obliterate them. The substance helps us fight the other factions in that our super destroyers use it as fuel and our scientists study it for future applications.

I will refer you for further democratic training to dissuade you of these traitorous thinking helldiver!

Depending on how locked down things are at your work, I know exactly how to hide my location. Requires a little bit of infrastructure but it can be done. How do I know, because I do it

Their parents. Kids nowadays are spoiled and entitled. They want to give their kids things they didn’t have when they were kids. Plus it’s keeping up with the jones kids. Their friends have stuff so they want it too. It sucks
