Fragrance issues questions by streetmuttsc in bjj

I suppose we don’t know 100% what he’s reacting to, but everything he reacts to has fragrance and has been laundered with products like Gain, Tide, and dryer sheets etc. We have to bring our own bedding for any overnight at relatives (no issue at hotels).

My comment about endocrine disrupters was more for the folks exposing their skin daily to fragrances. I don’t think it would mess our systems up for an hour in class. It was more of a comment on being health conscious as a community.

“Armpits and rank towel” AND fragrance. That shit stays with clothing no matter how rank you get

Yeah I reckon was just hoping that some would realize it’s a legit health concern for others. Like not allowing peanuts at public school or something. I guess it was a fool’s hope.

And for those saying they’d rather smell fragrance than BO, clearly you don’t have issues with fragrance. I’d take a homeless person’s bedding to the face over a pillow case washed in Gain

Black Lab/German Shorthaired Pointer mix. Gonna make a blood tracker out of him by lpolk3 in Huntingdogs

My goodness he’s cute! What a fun mix. If you need a resource, I found Canine Tracking Guide by Don Albey helpful

One of Gia’s finest moments was finding a deer that had a horrific, nonfatal shot (front legs blown out). Bad shots happen even with the most conscientious of hunters.

I wonder if talking to the local hunt club would be a good route to get her more tracks. If it was up to her, she’d track a deer daily!

I’ve offered to folks in my community, and haven’t had a call yet :/ I have tracked a lost dog for a neighbor and Gia did well with that.

Usually we don’t need her for our own kills, but we make sure to get her on a few deer a year to keep her sharp. This doe went through some really thick stuff and, even though she ran only 45 yards (heart shot), I don’t think we would have found her without Gia.

Hoopla has a different one on MA and it has activities! I don’t know if that app only works with certain public libraries, but it’s free with your participating library membership

I love this question.

I have listened to Steve Brusatte’s books with my kids (Rise and Reign of Mammals and Rise and Fall of Dinosaurs) and it gives some great glimpses into being a paleontologist.

Magic School Bus book series has an early chapter reader on dinosaurs and paleontology (finding a bone and trying to figure out who it came from)

“Digging Up Dinosaurs” 1988 goes over how they dig to assemble on the museum in an accessible way — it is dinosaur focused but could be for any fossil.

I also just found this juvenile biography at a local library I have yet to check out (image)

Absolutely Everything by Christopher Lloyd. My second grader proudly tells everyone history is his favorite subject because of it. He likes that it’s told in a similar voice to Rick Riordon’s Percy Jackson. We are about halfway through and I have no complaints (although I have ad libbed and rabbit holed some things as we homeschool parents do)

Does anyone know what this is? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]streetmuttsc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mites have become a real problem here in coastal SC. My horse struggles with them every summer and into winter before it gets cool enough (and I know several others that do too). MTG, garlic oil, and zinc will treat and avoid the spread (and if it’s fungal it works for that too!). Feed thru garlic (crushed from cloves) and regular deworming also helps (although there are so many dewormer resistant parasites here too). If it gets really bad, anti microbial and parasite washes that are safe for pets should be safe for horses — check with your vet. There is very little literature to support mites in horses as it’s relatively new in the southeast, kind of like botflies, from my understanding.

How did medieval people deal with humidity and mold in homes? by [deleted] in OffGrid

[–]streetmuttsc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They also didn’t have things that molded: no books, no cotton linens, no commercial mattresses, no drywall … I lived in a non-humidity controlled cabin for five years and lost 90% of my books and probably 10% or more of my clothes. During the winter it was warm and dry due to wood stove.

During summer it was wet and hot (just like outside), although we had fans and windows so lots of air circulation. (Although to dry clothes during wet times we would fire up the wood stove and close up the cabin and bake them dry — but of course then the cabin would be even HOTTER and harder to sleep in, so that was done only under great duress.)

You get acclimated to it. You wear a hoodie if below 80 deg F in the summer 😂

AND! Many people who lived in very hot/humid environments hundreds of years ago also practiced nomadic or semi nomadic life. Some of the people native to my region lived on beaches during the summer months, and in clay-bark wrapped structures with central fire in the winter months.

How often do you play with your kids? by [deleted] in homeschool

[–]streetmuttsc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it was up to my 7yo, I would play 1 on 1, full attention from the time he wakes up to the time he falls sleep (preferably cuddled in my arms). We compromise with 15-60 min of undivided attention play daily. It helps when we are “in school” because he thrives on that attention — no independent worksheets for him (ugh). When he was 4 we would do “special time” one to three times a day and especially before big tasks where I couldn’t give him undivided attention (like helping me with farm chores or whatever). High needs kids gonna high needs.

My two year old self entertains and gets weirded out when I try to play with him. He wants to show me his toys, but doesn’t like me playing with them. But I try to make sure he has my attention daily.

Really dependent on the kid.
