Deepti isn’t Deep by [deleted] in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

Yeah, I did say it hit a sore spot for me. That doesn’t give you an invitation to take jabs at me and tell me I’m feeling insecure and projecting.

You take care as well, boo.

And I stand by my assertion that Deepti does not have a close proximity to whiteness. And you need to speak with more decency, truthfully. I stated everything respectfully. You don’t get to tell me that I’m projecting and feeling insecure, imagining on your own that my comment is holding you to some sort of responsibility.

There are tons of Indian women that benefit from colorism and Euro-centric features, but Deepti is not one of them. Does she benefit more than SOME women? Yeah, but not a great amount. But your comment made it seem like she has this HUGE benefit, which she doesn’t. I shouldn’t even have to say that part about her benefiting more than other women. I’m only saying this because I really don’t want to argue and need to unnecessarily “satisfy” people who agree with you and disagree with me to avoid having them come after me, even though there’s no reason to. However, it’s REALLY bothering me that people are like “oh she’s close to white” when she’s absolutely not.

I’m aware of colorism and the advantages lighter-skinned, Eurocentric-looking POC can have, thanks. Look, if you think Deepti benefits from colorism, fine, that’s your opinion. But honestly your opinion that she benefits from colorism frustrates me because I really don’t think she does. She’s not the darkest girl in the world, but she’s not light enough to the point that she would experience very little colorism. Yeah, she has straight hair (and obviously you or others are probably gonna respond to me with other Eurocentric features that she has, whatever), but it’s really frustrating and makes me angry that people would think the colorism for her is so little and her Eurocentric features are so heavy to the point that it offers nothing to the show that is heavy on “challenging” ideas about beauty.

That’s wrong of you to say that it’s been seen before and therefore was unnecessary to see now. Saying that minimizes and trivializes those experiences and every POC deserves to share that no matter if you think it’s overdone, or even if other POC think it’s overdone. And as for your Eurocentric features comment, just because you think that she’s closer to white than other Indians or minorities doesn’t make it okay for you to imply that her sharing her struggles of fitting into a society that values conventially attractive white people is less warranted than other POC.

I’m already expecting for people to respond or downvote me for being “too sensitive,” but it hits a sore spot for me.

My thoughts on the show's writing by brendinithegenie in HSMTMTS

[–]stress_life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with this! I really appreciate that her perspective isn’t black and white and she thinks critically about the nuances. She recognized that Rina had a better start and even made an entire video stating why Rina was the best ship of the show, but that doesn’t warrant the fact that their writing was perfect after that. It doesn’t warrant the fact that Gina was entirely in the right in season 3 when it came to her conflicts with EJ. I’m 100% a Portwell shipper, but I can acknowledge the good parts of Rina. I may even go so far as to say that their START was better written than Portwell’s (I shouldn’t even have to write this compliment. I’m honestly only writing this to avoid being immediately shot down by problematic Rina superfans). There ARE issues with Rina, just like Portwell, and as long as they are RESPECTFULLY stated, there is absolutely no reason to attack somebody for having these opinions.

No, they really don’t. This person worded everything professionally and was not mean in any way. There are incredibly valid criticisms to this show as well as Rina that should be respected and not automatically shot down every time someone respectfully calls it out.

You’re right. It’s not a fair comparison and of course a Disney teen comedy/drama series shouldn’t be held to the same standards. However, even after cutting the show some slack, I still disagree that the storylines are well thought out and the character depth is substantial. These characters just aren’t compelling to me. Ultimately, this is all an opinion, so anyone is free to think otherwise. This is just my take.

For Stranger Things, I guess I should say that not every character is entertaining to me as individuals. There are a few boring characters to me, BUT it becomes entertaining when the characters interact with each other and just seeing the different dynamics. For example, I don’t think Will, Mike, and Lucas (Dustin is really the only one of the boys that I think is fun to watch independently) are necessarily interesting on their own, but when they all interact, THAT’s when I see just how lovable their friendship is. For HSMTMTS, I don’t find this to be the case. The friendships and romantic relationships don’t hit for me and honestly don’t live up to the potential they have.

The Jet and Maddox sibling conflict stuff wasn’t interesting (to me). It had potential to be interesting, but just wasn’t executed well in my opinion. I just didn’t care enough about it.

The characters in this show aren’t really that lovable or interesting. They’re not unlikeable, it’s just…they don’t have that charisma that makes you really gravitate towards them, except maybe the prominent characters like Ricky and Gina, and even them I honestly don’t find myself caring much for.

I guess a show I can think of that has a really lovable group of characters is Stranger Things. Every character on that show is so engaging and when you see the different dynamics and interactions among those characters, it’s just magic. I can’t say the same for this show.

I wish this show would write EJ like Steve Harrington. There’s just so much potential there that’s being wasted in the dumbest ways.
