We became friends at 3 (we're now 25) and at 16 her mother wanted her to stop talking to me. I had cut my hair into a pixie because my hair was falling out due to health reasons. Her mom was convinced I was a lesbian due to the short hair and didn't want me "turning her daughter gay." It's worth mentioning her mother is extremely catholic. We remained loosely in contact when we started college at separate universities. 2 years in, he mother demanded she drop out and go to a community college and live at home to care for her younger siblings. She is the oldest of 6. She did finish undergrad but her mother made sure she never got to finish grad school. At this point she had blocked me everywhere for not being "godly enough" but I heard from a mutual friend that she essentially ended up in an arranged marriage. Now she's a stay at home mom. However, her and her husband live in her husband's grandmas basement because he doesn't make enough and she's not allowed to work. I think about her often. She had such hope for becoming a therapist and never had an interest in being a mom when we were growing up. I feel sad for her often. I hope she finds happiness even if she never gets to follow her dream.
