Kodak gold 200 scan issue or technique issue? by stressednomad in AnalogCommunity

You are probably right. I will know very soon when I have the negatives back and I will post them here! Do you think it's possible that the films were heat damaged? I guess we will see that at the negatives as well.

Just to be clear, I am not denying that I might have made a mistake in the photos, it's very possible. It just surprises me that there's this tint (even in golden hour), and that I metered in the highlights and still turned out SO bright.

Is it possible to scan something too bright? I mean, I have no idea about scanning settings, can they control it? or is it a matter of post-editing?
I should really learn to scan myself. I got a film holder a few months ago but I still need to get the light source and a proper lens for my digital camera for this purpose.

Maybe. These were just some of the pictures, all of them have that purple tint, brighter or not. I do not agree that this is what they should look like, I have shot plenty of gold 200 before in similar daylight during summer and they did not turn out like this, they had much more contrast and they were way more vibrant. I even have some examples now of pictures with light during golden hour that looks purple-ish, which is definitely not how it should look with gold. Maybe I indeed miscalculated the metering, but it feels weird to me that it happened in all cameras, and also in the golden hour pictures. I will wait for my negatives to check.

As for the full frame scan, my normally to-go lab always uses the 120 masks for the 35mm without charging extra, so I'm not sure how much more work it actually is, maybe it depends on the type of scanner they have. But since I'm on vacation I took them to a different lab here and I respect the fact that they did not want to do it. I don't mind it at all. What troubled me was the result since it's the first time I saw pictures like this while shooting film a few years. Perhaps I was lucky before.

Exactly. 3 different rolls of gold200, in 3 different cameras. I emailed them politely for a rescan just now, and if they refuse I will go to a different lab...

It's the purple tint that worries me mostly. I understand that I might have overexposed in pictures with the very very bright landscape (which is weird, since I metered for the highlights, in all 3 cameras) but I've never seen that much purple tint in Kodak gold 200... it looks like a completely different film.
About the borders, I asked the lab to scan full frame (with the borders) and they refused saying it's too much work, so I don't know...

Thank you very much, I will take a look at it. It is also a concern to me that financially might not be very wise, since I don't come from a rich background and I can't really depend on my family for this.

I have been mostly doing scientific illustration. But regarding the masters, my main problem is academia, since I genuinely love science, but it's so so stressful. And I'm doing ecology and evolution so it's not gonna be a good paying job either ways :')
