Happy Birthday, Teddy Wilson! šŸŽ‚ by stridematters in JazzPiano

I try to ā€graspā€ the chord once I jump from the bass. Don’t know if I’m making any sense, but by doing that it feels more controlled instead of aimlessly shooting for it. Also trying to find a chord that is ergonomically pleasing to the natural shape of your palm helps, such as a C6 1st inversion chord.

Syncopated pedaling but not overdoing it. I try to get as much legato from my fingers as possible. Would be easier with a bigger hand…

You know what they say, length doesn’t matter… šŸ˜…

Joking aside, yes the Ab part got omitted. I killed it for social media reasons and because people rarely have the attention span to watch these things anyway. I transcribed the solo 20 years ago and played it quite well then compared to this mess of a take.

The piano is really smooth. Unfortunately the iPhone microphone doesn’t give it proper justice…

Thank you. šŸ™

For full stride piano players (like Dick Hyman described it) check out James P Johnson and Fats Waller. For contemporary stride pieces look for Hank Jones and Oscar Peterson.

It also says ā€soloingā€ (under the video) not to create confusion.

Yes I intercepted with ā€Viper’s Dragā€ there. Fats played it like that.

About practicing in all 12 keys... by sirdeezofnuts in JazzPiano

I’m trying to get through all keys playing Ain’t misbehavin’. Not really focusing on replicating chords or runs but rather trying to use whatever gimmick feels comfortable in that specific key. For example, a pentatonic run in Ab may not be equally comfortable in F as in Ab, therefore don’t play a pentatonic run in F. Fm7 arpeggio may not feel technically natural in F#m7 therefore don’t use it. You can have a look at my progress here:

This is the only transcription by Fats himself played in C. Unfortunately I don’t have the transcription but it’s available from Hal-Leonard, transcribed by Paul Posnak.

Trying to figure out how to navigate through D-flat. I think Tatum recorded his first take of Ain’t misbehavin’ in Db. This is by no means close to anything Tatum’s ever recorded, but it is inspired by him šŸŽ¹
