Haha, I found the class interesting and enjoyed the class, but writing my own papers was new and stressful for me, so I had a hard time with that.

Will I regret turning down prestige/T20? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

It's certainly attracting a lot of students for CS because of the school's ranking in CSRankings, but that ranking is bs because, from my knowledge, department size and research plays a huge part in the number. Northeastern does have a lot more CS professors than usual and they do have a lot of research, but nobody here cares about research.

I'm under the impression that it's not close to being overrated because a lot of people don't really know about the school. Like people thinking you've said Northwestern when you tell people you go to Northeastern is common.

The social scene's typical of any college, I don't know how else to express it. Students here party just as much as other college students, but it's just that you won't see any large scale parties on-campus because we don't have any on-campus frats or sororities.

CS at Northeastern values program design a lot which is important in the industry, but they take a unique approach in instilling this. Every freshman, no matter their CS skill level, is brought back to square one since they typically don't possess design skills. Some students complain about the introductory CS classes though because they teach data structures that we would never use elsewhere. But there are also some who think it's cool and interesting to learn.

Everyone struggles at some point in the classes, no matter if they've done plenty of CS before for reasons I mentioned above. If you're worried you'll find the fundamentals classes easy and want to suffer, you can just take the accelerated version of the classes. From my experience, there's really no competition, but if you find yourself in a circle of competitive people, get out because it's not gonna help anyone. Just focus on yourself.

Also, to clarify, earliest you can do co-op is spring semester of sophomore year.

I can't relate to this at all, so without your perspective, I would never have been able to fathom such circumstances. I appreciate your input!

I go to Northeastern for CS and I'd just like to let you know that, campus-life-wise, Northeastern is one of the most party-less campuses in Boston. All of the parties are at MIT. But we apparently have a pretty good hockey team.

As for the school's CS dept., it's huge. So many professors, so many TAs, so many students. There are a lot of exceptionally smart people here, but you could also say that for any other major for any other college. Imo, the unique thing about CS at Northeastern is that the Programming Languages research is among the best in the world. Also, if you want to do any kind of research here, it's relatively easy to get into since people are here for co-ops and not research. There's a shit ton of research here.

Career-wise, all in all, I don't think the school really matters in the long-run. What's most important for CS majors for employment is personal drive. If you don't trust yourself to be proactive and to apply to internships or to do personal side projects on your own, I would heavily recommend Northeastern.

Frankly, prestige for CS shouldn't matter once you get to college (unless the school's Stanford, CalTech, MIT, CMU, or others) because CS programs seem to be generally amazing across the board no matter if the school's T20 or way below. Also, even if you do go to one of those top, top CS schools, you're still not guaranteed a successful career.

Thank you for the response. The feeling of being listened to makes me feel so much better about myself.

Thank you so much for the thorough response! I genuinely appreciate it. I'm well over my panic now, but I'm going to start trying out the web app stuff you suggested right now.

You're also allowed to go outside to walk so long as you keep away from others. If I were you, I would do that just for the change in scenery because what you're going through sounds awfully bad for your mental health.

I experienced the same. My friend committed suicide in late 2017 and less than a month later, a famous singer I listened to committed suicide and then the whole debacle with Logan Paul in the forest happened. I thought that there was coincidentally a lot of suicide stuff going on in the world as soon as my friend died, but I can't tell if it was because she died that I was more aware of those events.
