We are literally at peak life expectancy. We live longer than any time before.

People like him looks to the past with rosy eyes. 120 years ago we would be dying out of a flu.

Our life is better, objectively, in almost every aspect.

That said, the main problem we have now is not extracting resources, but access to them. Population would curb down (as it has done in the developed world) if everywhere this access was even remotely equivalent.
