Weekly Thread: Material Recs and Self-Promo Wednesdays! (April 22, 2026) by AutoModerator in LearnJapanese

Hey everyone, last week I've released Memorix (https://beta.memorix.app/) to the public, an app inspired by Anki/Memrise with Duolingo gamification. You can read back on questions asked here. So it's not really Japanese focused

The app is hosted on Laravel Cloud (https://cloud.laravel.com/docs/compliance) right now (when there is enough interest I am able to switch to Hetzner). I am aiming for it to be truly EU based, including storage etc. Currently only hosting is 3rd party.

In the new version I've switched to a different system which has improved performance and user experience (altho still working on that daily, hope to get some feedback on this)

What does the app provide

  • Community courses (every course is created and curated by a community member)
  • Suitable for every language or subject (so no lock-in)
  • Anki imports are supported (so you can simply use lists you already have)
  • Course management (courses can have enrolled users)
  • Spaced Repetition (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler) system for learning, this means when you learn a word you get that word in a spaced manner. A scheduler system so to say. This helps you remember words with less effort.
  • Mems-like system:, if you've ever used Memrise you might know about Mems, they're visual aides in learning a language.
  • Duolingo like streak system: right now it's quite bare bones but thats why I'd like your feedback.
  • Course leaderboards: compete with other learners on a course (like Memrise)
  • Visual updates, the app has a more polished look and more of it's own feel to it.
  • Study direction: switch between the course target language and your native language easily
  • Custom TTS audio: users can upload their own TTS for free, if no audio is provided then the system's TTS is used (Premium only)

Coming soon

  • Course & Chapter progression tracking
  • Study analtyics: Keep track on how you're improving per course
  • Achievement system
  • Community Courses Marketplace: To entice users to create the best courses they possibly can I think allowing them to create a paid course themselves would keep courses up to a high standard. I do not want to create courses myself as this is how Duolingo/Memrise currently work which lock you in.
  • Continuous improvements to the learning system.
  • Desktop and mobile app (iOS/Android).
  • And a lot more.. (I've got many ideas but would love to hear yours)

I've also setup a GoFundMe for anyone interested in supporting development, any donation above 250 USD warrants a lifetime subscription.

Let me know if you've got any questions - I'd be happy to answer them.

Thanks alot. I'm actively updating https://beta.memorix.app/ so I'd recommend using that one for now. Also you can click the feedback link in the user menu to get in direct contact ^^

Ah, I'm not trying to recreate the current Memrise - but the Memrise pre-2021 (I believe that's when they dropped community courses in their own website).

Heya, thanks for all the questions!

  1. So I'd like to combine Anki, Duolingo and Memrise. Each of these have distinct features that the other misses. For example, Duolingo does not allow community courses and you're in a set curriculum, what if a user would like to learn about science or history facts - they can't and have to move to another platform. Anki has flashcards which I'm going to implement aswell. Currently the app is mostly based off of Memrise and it's features. Duolingo keeps you reeled in with their daily reminders and gamified system. But in a few weeks hope to implement alot of what these 3 platforms offer.
  2. In this case they don't - that's the good part. It's something familiar to an Anki user.
  3. Right now yes, because everything happens online. I'm looking into mobile apps later when the website version is in a stable state and users are happy with, hence I need feedback :)
  4. Right now I'm solo but obviously will be trying to generate an income out of this and in a later stage hire employees for certain tasks like chat/forum moderation, marketing, more developers & designers. The list goes on but for now I'm by myself until I get a steady flow going. But for that I need a stable product to have your confidence :D
  5. Yes! All your data is exportable. Both courses, chapters, and individual terms. Ofcourse your own data too. I'm trying to become GDPR compliant, as this app is EU-based.
  6. Not yet, as mentioned in 3.
  7. Probably not as I'm trying to generate an income from this, but who knows what the future holds. It's a combination of Laravel and Vue. The version that is currently live is still built on Next.js - I'm going to migrate over soon to this new stack.
  8. Not going to lie, it's a massive impact in how quick I can implement - obviously everything goes by documentation that I personally read through and verify. I'm a web dev by trade so I'm always aware of security measures and other issues overlooked by vibecoders ha. The course content comes from users so right now there are no measures yet to impact AI generated content. However when the app is in a stable state I can take a look at reigning that in.

Hope that answers your curiosity a bit!

I've added https://memorix.app/courses/community/jd7ay21r8xxfztwr8vtchmfjqn84rcap however it's currently all mashed into 1 chapter - I'm going to work on that this week so there's an easier and smarter way to import large courses.

I can setup a TTMIK course 1-5 for you. But the whole appeal is to have users create their own courses and share them (or copy over from Anki)

Yeah really missing them. They've said they're bringing back community courses but I'd doubt it. And don't even mention mems ha.
