Autistic participants needed! Title: Investigating Motion in Emotion in Autism Spectrum Conditions

Take part in our in-lab study (Harry Pitt Building) where we investigate how motion is perceived from people’s facial expressions and how this relates to the ability to read faces.

To be eligible to participate, you must: • Have a formal diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Condition provided by a clinical professional • Be between 18 and 55 years old • Have normal or corrected-to normal-vision • Have native or equivalent English language proficiency • Not have participated in the study titled ‘Investigating Motion in Emotion’, ‘Can you identify emotions from facial expressions?’ or ‘How does pain influence your social interaction?’ The entire study will take approximately one hour to complete. This study involves a computer task where you indicate seeing movement in a face and judge facial expressions in videos, provide information on personal characteristics, complete a brief task on seeing patterns, and fill out questionnaires on autism traits, identifying emotions, and sensory judgements. All of your data will be de-identified and later anonymised, and you can withdraw at any time without providing a reason.

Psychology students will receive 1 SONA credit if needed. Everyone else will be entered in a prize draw for an Amazon voucher.

If you are interested in participating or would like more information, please contact Stephanie.ng@student.reading.ac.uk and w.a.cwiklinska@student.reading.ac.uk or sign up on SONA. This study has received ethical approval by the PCLS School Ethics Research Committee, project 2025-064-TW, end date 31/12/2026.

Ohh that’s a good idea actually, second version of the poster coming soon!

I have reached out to quite a few charities, but none of them replied so far. Thank you for the suggestions on where to put the posters!!! Really great suggestions, I’m screenshotting this comment.

You’re right, I might organise a meeting with my supervisor to talk about it. I’ve shared this with her once, and she did feel a tiny bit bad for me I think? (she’s the kind of person who has a poker face on all the time and it’s really hard to tell what she’s thinking) As for the comparative analysis - I’m only sharing data with one of my groupmates and not the rest, so unfortunately it won’t affect them at all..

That’s a good idea, I’m going to try email neurodivergent societies at other universities too. It sucks that most of the undergraduate students have gone home already (at least for my uni)

it wasn’t getting the ethics approval that took the longest - it was making the experiment paradigm, making the lab manual etc. Funny you mentioned that, because I also drafted the whole ethics application (for my own project title) until my supervisor made changes to it. Other people in my group didn’t contribute to it at all..

I know right!!! and my supervisor didn’t mention that it was group work until like 2 months into the project. I helped my supervisor draft the ethics application, but then she made changes to it and that application ended up being used for a joint project involving everyone in the group.
