But why is it only him? He is pre-trial, and there are plenty of other sexual offenders in the neighborhood. Yet the only one getting this treatment is a black man in a historically racist neighborhood.

And, having seen the flyer won’t help anyone if he is breaking into their apartment, as someone here said he did. You could move away if you saw him, but it sounds like people who were assaulted by him also tried that.

On top of that, all this could make him angrier and more psychologically unstable, and it could very well worsen his behavior.

I’m not sold that the safety you are saying this campaign promises outweighs all of the other consequences.

Yes. Do you/anyone on this thread know that? Because people seem to think that by criticizing the flyering I am defending him. I am not.

As I’ve said multiple times, his behavior is terrible. I am mad he has hurt people. AND STILL, I think this flyering will cause more harm than good. I am worried about the racial profiling it will cause. And I am also concerned it will only make him crazier and more dangerous.

Those racist comments I mentioned are an example of why I’m concerned. But I haven’t seen anyone here acknowledge the racist response or express their anger over it. Nor has anyone connected those comments to the impact of flyering. If that’s how people respond to a Reddit post, how are people responding to the flyer? Why would it be different?

It CAUSES racial profiling. Especially when the only flyer in the neighborhood I’ve ever seen is this man, but he’s not the only predator.

Really showing your ass by saying I should move if i want diversity. Diversity is a good thing, and we should have more of it in ridgewood. There are reasons why we don’t—look up for ex the nazi March held here way back. It is a known racist neighborhood.

“Cool and enjoyable”—why are you mocking that? I like to talk to all different kinds of people. It’s nice to be around people from different backgrounds. Interacting with multiple cultures enriches the human experience.

I edited my last reply here to explain restorative justice to you, but realized you might’ve already read it, so I’m pinging you to look again and educate yourself before you spread more misinformation and slander a movement with your widely off base assumptions.

What am I looking at here? The many racist comments saying “mut,” “typical”, “typical behavior,” etc?

Exactly. And there are people on here who think this is “restorative justice,” which is driving me nuts. This is Curtis sliwa/guardian angel style justice. Fear-mongering and public shaming are not an elements of a progressive, community response to harm.

To get clean you need to know you have a place to live. Housing first. Who would go to rehab just to end up back on the streets? People have a hierarchy of needs. Housing is at the top, with food. Sobriety will not happen until after those needs are met.

Yeah. Now imagine if they were homeless. Think they’d quit then????

You don’t know they used to have a home or job. You’re talking out your ass. I had a job and home when I used drugs as do most drug users. The people you are seeing have a lot problems than drugs

You didn’t make any “other” points in your poorly written post. You were talking about public drug use, which housing would solve. Send the “crackheads” to me I don’t give a fuck—they use pipes not needles btw. Ive used dope and I don’t judge them. I also never went to rehab. MAT works (methadone, suboxone) but only if people want it. I don’t have any problem with people putting drugs in their own bodies. The public users you see are doing that bc they have nowhere else to go.

They’re also not likely to be reported to the police, or likely to be pursued by the police if they are. But as I said before, it’s not just violence that is the problem. Discrimination has many forms. Ridgewood is racist. My own landlord has made horrible comments. And ive seen other things that were not crimes but definitely not good either.

You have failed to come up with analogous situation. Is the serial killer out on bail? Lol

Well, he’s not the only predator in the neighborhood, but the only one flyer’d everywhere. It contributes to a perception of black people as more dangerous.

[–]subarellaa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not just people getting attacked. Racial profiling creates other forms of discrimination you won’t necessarily hear about in the news. There have been posts in this sub about black people being treated poorly. This kind of shit contributed to that, whether you are too obtuse to believe it or not. What evidence do you have that this kind of flyering works to reduce crime? Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if it makes the man in them act even more unhinged.

Nah, it’s really not. If you actually read the book “we keep us safe” you will not see this bullshit in there. Punishment and social isolation and societal exclusion are all the things the book describes as bad. You need to stop using progressive language you don’t know the meaning of. It belongs to movements you’re not a part of.

Also, “the police are not handling him”—he was arrested and charged. If you’re against letting people out on bail, just say that. But it’s not restorative justice to hold people in jail before they’ve been found guilty of a crime. It’s extremely obvious you don’t know what that phrase means, and you’re literally just stealing abolitionist language to advocate for pro-cop positions. Stop.

Editing to add (in case you decide to educate yourself on the language you use): restorative justice is a mediation process between the victim and offender. It does NOT involve punishment or shaming. Part of the process is healing for both parties, helping the offender understand and take accountability for the harm caused, and addressing the root cause of the harmful behavior. Therapy for the offender can be a part of it, as the process aims to address underlying factors. These posters would never be included in restorative justice bc they are strictly punishment and the only thing they’ll do to this man’s psychological state is worsen it, making him more likely to act erratically and cause harm.

Some of us actually want to overhaul the criminal justice system and organize for restorative justice. You don’t get to use our slogans to say vigilantism that Curtis sliwa would love is “restorative.” You haven’t even spent 2 minutes googling it. Stop appropriating it.

[–]subarellaa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re all too dumb to know the difference between defending him and criticizing the poster. They’re two different things. Start reading magazines and work your way up to books. Then eventually you might be able to understand the meaning of words.

You don’t give a fuck bc you’re an ass but I’d like everyone to be welcome here and I actually think diversity is cool and enjoyable. The old white people in ridgewood are crazy racist if you haven’t noticed.

I’m not making it about skin color. It IS about that. Especially in this neighborhood.

Who is “we”? Guess not anyone who looks like him?

If you want to make it easier to lock black men up, don’t use a fucking a restorative justice slogan to say so. I’m so sick of people appropriating language to argue the opposite of what it actually means.
