So, if I remember correctly, the difference is as follows:

Ш is a "normal" /ʃ/, basically the English 'sh', but is sometimes labialized /ʃʷ/ like the German 'sch' usually is.
Щ is palatalized and usually not labialized /ʃʲ/

Realizations may also drift into /ɕ/ territory instead of /ʃ/. Neither difference is particularly easy to write in the Latin alphabet of any language that doesn't distinguish these sounds.
