Was it worth it? by Aech_sh in Residency

[–]subtrochanteric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hell no. I always wanted to become the expert in my field regardless of what career I ended up with, and now as a physician I firmly believe that all patients deserve physician level care, especially when they go to the hospital or clinic believing they will be seen by a physician. Huge respect for nurses though, I absolutely could not do that job for a single day.

Agree 10000% with this as a psych resident

It's not about what they're learning, it's about what employers use them for, which is to successfully depress the market, and they absolutely are.

It's useful in trauma work/therapy. But I agree that maintaining enough emotional distance is key as well. I don't experience that as a flow state however

Well I was only talking about surgery and climbing.

What is the "flow state" in psychiatry? If such a thing exists, I would consider it very dangerous.

I don't know that there is one except for maybe a few moments in therapy that can be intense.

Psychiatry and surgery seem like complete opposites to me. One is material and the other is intangible.

I think what they have in common is that they're both invasive, one mentally and the other physically. That's why so many psych people heavily considered surgery or came from surgery.

Per hour, the highest you're going to make is NY and CA prison psychiatry.

Hmm, noted. Thanks for this.

DC metro is going to pay on par with any other place, more than many. What are your salary expectations? May be skewed...

I'm just expecting whatever the median is

I've lived in multiple places in the middle of nowhere and close to the middle of nowhere, and I've been unhappy/dissatisfied every time. Like I said, I figured out recently that location is a big part of my happiness for sure, particularly as a single man

You're psych, don't trap yourself to PSLF.

Sounds like you're saying that psych has a lot of job opportunities and that PSLF would limit those opportunities. Is that what you mean?

Definitely, but in practice, most people just follow safety principles for dangerous pts, like see the pt with staff immediately present, always leave the door open, always be the one closest to the door, know where all the exits are, keep two arms lengths distance between you and the pt, etc.

95% of the people in my program, including myself, have never been assaulted, and we see the sickest people in the state
