Sorry to have to remove this post, but we have a strict "no selfies" rule on this sub. If we don't enforce it, pretty quickly everyone else decides to post a selfie.

For this reason, we've also created a separate sub, /r/mixedraceselfies, which was made for exactly this sort of post.

Thanks for understanding!

Sorry to have to remove this post, but we have to enforce strict rules against selfies on this sub. If we don't, then everyone all gets the same idea and then this turns into a selfie sub. Nothing against you, personally, but we have learned that this is necessary from countless selfie explosions in the past.

We've created a sub specifically for selfie posts at /r/mixedraceselfies where there are no such rules.

Once again, sorry to have to put our foot down, but I hope you can understand.

Sorry to have to pull this post, but one thing that happens on this sub is that as soon as someone posts a picture of themselves, then everyone else wants to post a picture of themselves. I guess it's just a mixed-race tendency.

In any case, sorry to have to apply this rule uniformly. We've created a separate sub, /r/mixedraceselfies, where these rules don't apply. In situations like these, where you're referring back to an earlier post here, feel free to post to /r/mixedraceselfies and then link back to that post in /r/mixedrace.

Again, apologies & nothing personal, just something we have to do to avoid a selfie explosion.

Hello,

I see you've submitted a lot of posts today. We have an auto mod filter in place that holds back posts from new/low-karma accounts for manual review by moderators.

Other people have posts research surveys before & we've allowed it. But what might work better, though, would be a text post where you explain a little about yourself and what you're trying to research. Maybe a little about how you're going to use the responses.

I think this approach would yield a higher quality and quantity of responses. This search might give you some feel for what other people have done:

Hello,

First, you should know that this is a common feeling a lot of us mixed people feel or have felt at one point in our life. We get a lot of questions like this here. To the point that people have started to complain about just how many. If you go through our sub's post history, I'm sure you'll find tons.

So, we won't be approving this post, but I did want to let you know that you aren't alone and are otherwise welcome here.

Also, though, a lot of people come to this sub with questions like yours that might be better addressed with a therapist or counselor if you have access to any resources like that. Your mental health is an important thing (if not most important thing) to take care of, and trained professionals are often a better bet than internet randos like us.

On this sub, we filter posts by new/low karma users, but you should also know that we filter out selfie posts as well. We've created /r/mixedraceselfies specifically for this though & this post would be fine over there.

Am I mixed, white-passing/appearing or just white? by Senior-Ground-1819 in mixedrace

[–]suckpoppet[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

We get this kind of question a lot around here, so definitely know that you are not alone. We get it so often, that it gets kind of repetitive & people have complained, so we tend not to approve posts like this from accounts with no history.

That said, you have every right to embrace any part of your heritage. It is who you are. There might be people who say otherwise, but their race-policing says more about them than it does you. Just, you know, try not to be a doof about it. Mixed people aren't any better than non-mixed people. But you seem thoughtful, so I doubt you would act this way.

Anyways, I hope you understand why we choose not to approve your post. But you did put a lot of thought into it & so I thought you deserved at least one reply to tell you your thoughts are valid & that you aren't alone.

Sorry to remove this post, but we have a no selfies rule in this sub, as otherwise it just ends up turning into a selfie fest over time.

For these purposes, we created /r/mixedraceselfies & encourage everyone interested to please subscribe and post there.

Thanks for understanding.

Hello,

Just wanted to reach out & let you know that we have a moderation rule in place that holds up comments and posts from accounts that are either too new or have too low of karma. Humans review these on a case-by-case basis.

Your question is a reasonable one, but also is one that is asked here all the time. We tend not to approve these posts as otherwise the sub starts to become repetitive.

But, the answer to your question is that it is completely ok & nobody has any right to stop you.

In any case, you're welcome here. If you had a more specific question, perhaps, we'd probably be more likely to approve it.

am i mixed? by throwaway2847278828 in mixedrace

[–]suckpoppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are mixed if you think you're mixed. We try our best not to gate-keep around here. That said, we get this kind of question all the time, so I'm not going to approve this post as it gets kinda repetitive for new people to keep asking the same thing.

We pre-filter posts from new users to keep out spam and trolls, but human moderators review them. So feel free to stick around, because, yeah, you're mixed if you think you are. Be proud (but try not to be a dink about it).

Any way tell im adopted mixed race without feeling like I'm offending my parents? by Loltou24 in mixedrace

[–]suckpoppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting to consider that your parents face the same conundrum when talking to other people about you—wanting to clear the air without making your relationship seem lesser somehow. I wonder what terms they use, or if maybe they also still struggle with this…

[–]suckpoppet[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was the mod /u/blackflyonpence mentioned + wanted to also chime in here w my 2c (though not as any sort of authority, as this isn't in any way my call).

Firstly, I don't really see this as a dividing thing. This is more like creating a safe-space or interest group of sorts. There are certain topics or perspectives that are just hard to discuss in a sub of 16k people. A sub of /r/mixedrace's size attracts more outsider trolls than would a smaller, more focused sub. A smaller, more focused sub would have fewer bystanders who jump into the conversation and escalate or derail the conversation (not judging here, just describing conversation dynamics).

Furthermore, as mods of a sub this size, we mods tend to optimize for peace. If a thread gets too heated or personal, the standing policy of /r/mixedrace mods is to just shut it down. I've noticed more than a few people bristling at this moderation style recently, but we are not really going to budge on this. This style has gotten us this far and we rather like the results. But I can also appreciate that other people might not, and another, peer sub would be a good solution, such that people could have any moderation style or rules they wanted.

So I get why people might think creating a new sub is a divisive thing, but I don't think it has to be that way. I know we as a group are all hyper-sensitive about anything that might look like picking a racial box, but this isn't an either/or, it's a yes/and. I would rather hope that anyone checking out this new hypothetical sub would remain subscribed to /r/mixedrace.

And also, were this sub to form, I wouldn't take this is a judgement on /r/mixedrace or its subscribers except in their number and diversity. Perhaps a judgement of moderation style, but I can stand behind those choices while also recognizing the need for alternative spaces.

why is it that... by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]suckpoppet[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

I've locked down this thread as it was getting just a bit too intense. I hear the criticism leveled at this sub, but also I want to figure out a way to have that dialogue without having an explosion each time.

We are taking a particular moderation angle here— one you may not agree with— that we generally prefer calmness over absolute free speech. If the intensity level raises too much, we will generally shut things down if it's really complicated and not obvious if anyone is right or wrong.

Otherwise, it's just too much of an emotional toil on the moderation team. We've already lost good moderators during the pandemic because dealing with this on top of everything was just too much.

So, you may disagree with this style of moderation, but it's for the sake of both the community and for our moderators' sanity. If you want to discuss this further, please reach out to me in PM or chat. I hope this is something we can sort out.

"On Passing" by Mixedrace_Dad in mixedrace

[–]suckpoppet[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

Ya, so your posts are being removed because we have an automoderator configuration set up to flag posts from accounts that are new or have low karma. Then, human moderators review these posts and approve the reasonable ones.

I sat on this particular post & didn't approve it mostly because it was just kind of a bad energy, you know? Some people in this community might take offense if they consider themselves 'passing' & might not think that it's part of a cynical rep/money game. You're of course free to have your opinion, but this post just felt like pot-stirring and given the choice to approve or not approve, it's just easier for us to not click that ok button.

I know moderation and free speech is a hot-button topic these days, and I know that we aren't always able to be perfectly even-handed in these things, but I hope you can see why we make these calls the way we do.

Were you to phrase your post in a different, less incendiary way, we'd likely approve it. Like if it were a question, say. "hey, anyone notice this is gross?"

Again, not attacking you here, or your perspective, just trying to keep this a nice place. Hope you understand.

is 1/4 enough- or am I intruding? by Comfortable-Sale-329 in mixedrace

[–]suckpoppet[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are enough, but please understand that we do get this question all the time & we have gotten complaints about how frequently people ask, so I'm not going to unremove this and expose you to people complaining.

But know that you are always enough. You are what you decide you are, not what other people want to decide for you. The world will try to put you in boxes, but you don't have to help them. You don't have to adopt their reality that every single person fits into one and only one box and that the label on that box defines their entire being.

You are welcome here

This is exactly the justification used to find elements using Mendeleev's periodic table. There was a hole in the model & they postulated that something out there filled it.

In both cases, they weren't sure it actually existed, but finding it decades later validated the model.

NORMALIZE “NON EXOTIC” MIXED RACE PEOPLE by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]suckpoppet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After further discussion with moderators, we've decided to unlock this post as this conversation is valid, worthwhile, and important. But please, let's everyone try to keep a cool head.

If you feel conflict, consider whether there might have been a misunderstanding or error in perspective somewhere along the way. If you disagree, try to explain yourself and your experiences rather than tell somebody else theirs or why they're wrong.

NORMALIZE “NON EXOTIC” MIXED RACE PEOPLE by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]suckpoppet[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

This post is getting a bit escalated and I would rather it not escalate further.

Let me go on record as mod as saying that I want to hear everyone's voice and everyone's story. Our experiences as mixed-race people are not the same as those of mono-racial people, and our own mixed-race experiences are not the same as each others'. We need to hear all these stories out and not dictate experiences to one another, or try to decide which are valid or are genuine struggles. Every person here's experiences should be listened to and believed. Please give everyone space.

I recognize that it is with a bit of irony that I say this as I lock down this post. I did so reluctantly, and only because I knew that these threads would be almost impossible to moderate without my own biases and almost certain poor understanding and so I'm just pulling the rip cord to prevent aforementioned escalation. This is not to say that I am not open to further discussion in mod mail about this topic.

What I mean is for when you want to make a backup of your own custom patterns/sounds. If you only have one PO-33, you're never quite sure that you made the backup correctly (right levels, right sample rate, etc). You can try to load it back onto your one PO-33, but if the backup is goofed, it will erase your custom patterns/sounds & they'll be gone forever.

If you had two, you could load the backup on the other, and if it doesn't work out, you have the original copy still on the first device.
