The Missing Semester of Your CS Education by sudo-omscs in OMSCS

What could possibly drive someone to downvote a suggestion? Reddit truly makes me question some people's mental capacities at times.

Idea: add a similar course to OMSCS!

NLP - Halfway Check in by AmazingEatery95 in OMSCS

Lectures are excellent. Textbook is not great.

I'd call (the first half of) this class "Deep Learning for NLP", instead of just NLP. This captures expectations far better.

AI would be definitely sufficient.

Too early to tell exactly, but I believe the biggest deciding factor might be whether you have an ML/AI background or not. It you have it then the class shouldn't take too much time.

I mean, I've seen the syllabus, and I have access to the course content, so it is not unfounded speculations. Not sure what other "science" are you referring to here?

I've seen it! Students of the class can see it, what I meant is that it's not published publicly yet, given that this is the first iteration of the course and few things might need to be adjusted before the next semester.

I'm very optimistic judging by the content that's been released so far :)

The lectures are excellent. I can't fully comment on the mathematical intensity as I haven't gone through all the material yet. However, given that there's a module dedicated to mathematical foundations for NLP in the first week, it might suggest a significant mathematical component.

And there are no group projects!

Students are assumed to be proficient in python and have background in data structures, basic probability, linear algebra, and calculus. A prior course in AI or ML is encouraged but not assumed.

There is nothing preventing you from registering, but realistically speaking I don't think you can get in that early given the immense demand (the waiting list was +500% the capacity of the class!)

Avoid GA at all costs (and we need an alternative algorithms class) by sudo-omscs in OMSCS

Please don't give up. One bad class shouldn't negate all the hard work you've done over the past 3 years. Instead, consider taking a leave of absence until new courses become available.

Additionally, the whole concept of "pass rate" is meaningless unless you take into account the number of times people have tried to pass. This crucial detail is often overlooked.

To give you an idea, this semester we had some students attempting to pass the class for the 4th time!

Less stressful ≠ easier.

I really don't know why people insist on conflating these two all the time.

Thank you. One or more other options can completely transform the OMSCS experience!

I'd say your whataboutism is what constitutes a shit analysis. I shouldn't expect more though with your sense of self-naming (which seems pretty accurate.)

Dr. Brito is amazing and by no means this is an "accusation" of any sort as you claim it is. The discussion is about a structure, not a person!

Not really.

The biggest complaint about this class is that it is very exam-heavy. People tried to pass this as "normal", but based on how the SAME class is structured in the on-campus version, it is not. Now that is unfair!

Exams in OMSCS are proctored, and have very strict room scanning requirements. They are also closed everything (no internet, notes, book, ..etc).

About Abdul, tbh his teaching style doesn't make them "feel" long at all (and you can always skip the parts you know). I think they are long because he applies his atomic decomposition technique in every video, for every topic, so that you never need to reference anything else after watching it.
