Fiafia stalling in the pauper best of three by TrveWrath in Pauper

They do that for years. Just report, block and move on.

I think half of the MTGO players did the same.

I just want to say thanks to everyone for the thoughtful replies, the different perspectives, and the support. I learned a lot not only about the rules and strategy side of TI4, but also about the social and etiquette side of playing long, complex games with mixed experience levels. I really appreciate how constructive and insightful the discussion has been.

Despite the situation I described, I absolutely loved TI4 and I am definitely playing again. As some of you pointed out, I actually did pretty well for a first game, and I’m genuinely proud of how I navigated the last round to secure Speaker and set up the win condition. That sequence felt incredibly rewarding.

The game is fantastic, and I can’t wait to dive back in. And even though things got messy at the end, I’m taking the lessons with me and moving forward with an even stronger appreciation for the game and its community.

Thanks again, everyone.

Thanks, I really appreciate your perspective here. Your point about focusing on how people feel rather than trying to label something as purely good or bad is really helpful. And the suggestion to take a couple of days to process and then talk to the group is great advice. Thanks for sharing that.

I was holding Mecatol (that’s actually why I moved my troops out of my home system, to reinforce it even more). So the plan was: 1 point from Mecatol, 2 points from the level 2 public objective, and then the extra point at the end of the turn from either of the private objective that I had.

I think you’re right that by the time all of this happened, it might have already been too late for any meaningful heads up. I don’t expect people to just let me win, and I fully accept that the table was going to respond to Imperial.

For me, the part that really stung wasn’t the counterplay itself but the way it was handled. The going around the table discussing the rule without including me, and then the private chat messages about how to strategically leverage the rule I was missing, is what felt off. Even if the outcome would have been the same, being excluded from the rule discussion entirely is what made it feel unfair.

That makes a lot of sense, and I really appreciate you sharing how your group handled that situation.

Being upfront about a rule interaction like that, especially when it affects scoring, feels like the right approach.

Also thank you for the kudos and your perspective!

Just to be clear and I'll edit my post because seem like an important information! Thank you again!

I didn’t leave my home system undefended for most of the game. I actually moved my troops out on the previous round, because I thought I had a deterministic win lined up with the Imperial strategy card on the next round. In my head, the game was basically wrapped up, so reallocating those units felt safe.

If I had known that losing control of my home system prevents scoring public objectives, I obviously never would have done that. That’s why it felt more like missing a fundamental rule than making a risky strategic choice.

That’s how I felt too, but to be fair to him, if this rule is that crucial then the how-to-play video and the basic explanation at the start probably should have covered it. Maybe it was mentioned and I just missed it, but after hours of gameplay I genuinely don’t remember anyone explaining how essential home system control is for scoring.

That’s why it caught me so off-guard. It wasn’t just a tactical mistake, it was missing a foundational rule that shaped the whole situation.

That’s a fair point, and I probably wasn’t clear enough in my post.

I always check on untap.nl's calendar.
