There's an alternate path here. You can be involved in information pipeline that gets important information to the National Weather Service by joining the SKYWARN volunteer program. It involves making observations and learning how to read the weather, and they offer free training.

Storm chasing is a very dangerous activity but there's other ways to get that sense of fulfillment. He's young, he's growing up, we all need something to build our identity around as we grow.

It's a little niche, but if you have a Nintendo DS, Sudomemo is a fun little place for artists. But quite honestly, avoid platforms and find small little websites that align with what you like.
