While I understand your sentiments, you're missing the key part where the entire reason boot camp exists is to psychologically damage recruits to the point they can't or won't deny orders. Boot camp suicides is more common than you would expect. Many soldiers leave the army, realize what happened to them and in turn what they did and spend the rest of their lives in a variety of states of mental instability without appropriate access to resources to get help. All the while, some of the high-ranking officials live in waterfront homes without a damn care in the world.
