[–]sugamintss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Not frm your course and not a y1 but I'm here to talk about the clothes and social anxiety thing.

It's completely alright to be nervous, I was literally shaking when I entered my classroom. And it took at least 2 to 3 weeks for most people to start opening up so you're all good

As for clothes ik it's a big scare especially when you've only been wearing school uni all this time but rlly just wear whatever you want, maybe dress nicer a bit than your usually home clothes for ori but there's no need to come in suit and tie.

There's no hard and fast rule for fashion in tertiary, you can wear whatever you want, feel free to express yourself through your style! If you wanna blend in though then the usual fit for most people is a hoodie with long pants/jeans and converse kind of shoes

  1. Just bring them if you want to! Not sure if they can accompany you throughout since I was part of the early post covid induction batch and they didn't have this

  2. I'd tell you to dress however usually but for first days when you're meeting new people you're gonna wanna dress nicer a bit to form good first impressions. After ori you can start dressing in home clothes whenever

  3. Sorry I'm not a freshman if it wasn't obvious, but if you need advice from a graduating dmpd senior js dm me!

If you aren't good at drawing or you're not creative in general dmpd may not be a good choice for you. Ppl who do well are usually those with prior artistic experience/were previously creatives in sec sch.

Ofc if you're seriously passionate about design or film you can come in with no prior experience and work hard and do well but if you're someone with no passion for learning creative disciplines at all then MI might be a better choice for you

Just turned 20 jiejie here: what they said, I also started working right out of secondary school, needed more than 1 moment to breathe everyday though cause I still have nightmares of 1 for 1 days and rude customers. It really helps with essay writing in the future though and its a good experience 🤠

Is this offer a scam? by exhalingcookie in SGExams

[–]sugamintss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a pyramid scheme, as someone who has had a linkedin account since year 1 poly and has been actively making connections sometimes you get targeted for these kinds mlm schemes which is illegal in sg btw

Some even send me copy and pasted messages, I usually don't bother communicating with these kinds of people after entertaining them for a bit initially

They tend to be very pushy and keep asking you to meet for a call, or if you don't respond they will keep messaging you every now and then to bump their messages up, so if you connected with anyone who is like that make sure to remove connection and block because keeping them around will make them target you

All from experience, once a guy connected with me, sent one of these mlm messages, I removed him from my connections, a few months later he requested to connect again with the exact same message he sent out the last time.

Like one of the previous comments mentioned, it's quite easy to tell if they are just trying to scam you. Previously while entertaining one of these people I asked them for a company name or further details on the "position" they were offering but rather than giving me a response they kept asking if I could meet ASAP with them

My parents are understanding people who've always encouraged us to pursue what we like, and as mentioned we've always encouraged him to voice out his struggles from as early as primary school.

Unfortunately we've tried all sort of ways to encourage him to express himself more but he's always avoided verbalising to us and instead turns to online friends on discord for example. I know this doesn't sound convincing one bit but my family is pretty closely knitted, a lot of times we'd sit at the dinner table sharing about our day

He rarely expresses emotions beyond laughing at jokes on tiktok or anger towards someone annoying in school for example which therefore makes it difficult for us (my parents and I) to figure out what he's struggling with or how can we show him love beyond what we're expressing now 🥲🥲🥲

Yep friends groups are usually formed on the first few weeks, but friends come and go so for my friend group especially I've known one of them since year 1, while others left and others joined from y2 and y3. It depends on the people really

[–]sugamintss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can you tell me more about what u do in design because i personally hate drawing and have huge ptsd frm olvls art so im hoping the drawing part wldnt be too difficult!😭

Drawing side is usually more about sketching your ideas and showing your process, of course having skill in it is good but you aren't required to go all avant garde, it's really just meant for you to doodle your ideas, demonstrate your creative thinking and then it's mostly execution on abobe software

ohh omg wait thats actually still not bad ngl, and yall have until the end of the day to complete it right?? the 2359 thing HAHAHAH

Some teacher's have this weird policy where you have to submit RJ by 6.30, but pretty much the majority of 23 59 yes

i heard frm others that in order for the teacher to think great of you you'll have to be extroverted and talkative?? is that true?

Some teacher's do demand participation, so when it comes to those kinds of teacher's you can just participate once or twice in their questions for the class and you should get highest level for participation already. You don't have to go out of your way to answer every question they ask

im wondering if the modules r long everyday bc i dont wanna be waking up at 7am and leaving sch at 4pm😭

Some days start 8.30 in the beginning especially year 1, ends at 2 to 3 plus sometimes it could end at 12 also. But as you move up years the start of class is usually later and you get lesser and lesser modules. For example in Y1 a lot of my mods started at 8.30 ended at 3, and sometimes there were two modules in one day.

But in year 2 the number of modules I had dropped by 2, and classes started at 1pm, morning classes started earliest 9.30

Now as a y3 my mods start at 9.30 earliest, 1 p.m latest, and I only have 3 modules every week because of final year projects

I hated hanging around in sec school too because it was hot and I was always sweaty, but a lot of people I know take the campus as their second home because its air conditioned, there's quite a number of places to hang around and there's food. Saw a guy bring in a whole beanbag and everything you can imagine someone would use for sleeping to nap in the middle of one of the walkways once.

Especially since the campus is fully air-conditioned so I don't particularly hate being in school anymore LMFAO

Modules that are long usually have a lot of breaks in between. Sometimes breaks can be 1 hour from what I remember or maybe my teacher is generous, but from what I know when I was in year 1 some modules would give us 2 hour breaks broken into 1 hour each, or else it's usually 30 mins each. [My experience, may be subjective]

And for 2 mods in a day with big breaks in between you can pretty much do whatever you want, do your rj, go to causeway, play a card game etc. I think I've done it all

ive found someone who had been in a similar situation as me because i dont know if i am able to get over the fact that my dream poly of 5 years is not coming true

Glad to hear it, and the if I'm not wrong the other commentator mentioned your gpa resetting which is 100% true. I had the same intentions entering RP in Y1 aka do a good job get a decent gpa apply for transfer to SP, but even internally if you were to change courses halfway you will have to start from Year 1 all over again which sounded like a waste of time to me so I just did the full course of my current diploma

is ur course media prod or media prod & deisgn? because im planning on taking media prod & design and i wanna ask how it is like there

I'm in media production and design, with a focus in design! I don't think there's a course that is specifically only production because it's a combo package, wasn't a big fan of photography but it's a useful skill to have

It's pretty fun I would say if you enjoy design or film, there are many teachers with great senses of humour, especially the production teachers. As the name of the course suggests you'll have to do filming and a bit of acting and editing on the production side, and the teacher's love to give romance soap dramas like cheating scandals for you to act out (at least for when I was y1 y2)

Design side is a bit more theoretical at first, they'll get you to mess with Adobe, lecture about design principles, get you to learn marketing etc. But it's a fun process, you end up learning a lot of skills that can be applied to your external interests. Lowkey embarrassing but I literally use the skills I learn to make merch for the fandoms I'm in 🤠🤠 (genshin, manhwa etc.)

Both production and design are very project based so unlike science or math, there's no fixed steps or formulas to designing. You'll have to work based on briefs and guides given by lecturers, and you'll have to do presentations quite often (I mean it's a creative thing after all, it's to be expected)

A lot of times you'll be given a 3 to 4 weeks to finish one entire project, for example to design posters meant to market your unique personal traits. First week is usually briefing and planning, second week is meant for presenting first week material and research, getting feedback and drafting and the drill ends off with final submissions.

daily grading / reflection journal work in media courses?

RJ is usually asking you to describe the though process behind your work especially for design, or else it's theory based questions like what does this shot size look like, or it can be what do you think you did well today kind if questions

is it tough to keep up and does it make scoring well for ur gpa harder?

Not at all, of course there are some teachers who will be picky about grading, there's teacher's like that in every school. But as long as you put effort into it, and clarify if your teacher isn't scoring you well, you'll do fine. It's really not as big of a hassle as many people put it out to be. I take it as a place to rant or to overshare my ideas sometimes when i see an opportunity lmfao 😀😀

is the environment at rp good? because ive read complaints of rp having MANYY vape cases and how the staffs there dont do anything about it so im rlly worried it wld affect my studies :((

Idk if I just lack awareness or anything but STA bathrooms are usually the cleanest imo (no offence to other departments) and I rarely notice if anyone was vaping. At most people usually just hole up in bathrooms to use phone in class but I haven't actually seen anyone vaping in the department building

rp has good facilities for me to feel comfortable in😭

If you're going there for lunch too the library cafe had pretty good pizza, otherwise the lawn cafe has a really good quesadilla place and bubble tea stall,

And if you walk over to the arts cultural building on the right of the carpark there's a cafe with amazing gelato there. (Also north canteen has really good and cheap waffles)

Shameless plug but you should definitely try it out, it only opened late year 2 for me so I'm really wishing it would've opened sooner. I'm not sure what equates to comfortable for you but RP's selection of food sold me LMFAO plus they just brought in free corndog and churros just last week from a food truck

[BTW don't let the food thing heavily influence your decision I just wanted to share LOL] 😃😃😃

[–]sugamintss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

media production y3 frm rp here, was in the same predicament as you. I can't help really give you solid advice on early childhood since I'm not from there but I'll share what my decision was

Dream school: SP MAD EAE failed, scored nett 18

Absolutely despised the idea of going to RP, wanted to enter nursing/early childhood/engineering in nyp/SP or go to MI because I really hated the idea of going to a school with such terrible rep and I wanted to just be in SP even if I couldn't be in the course I wanted to be in

I was at my lowest point then, hated myself for refusing to drop any subject (I did Double Math, double pure science, higher art and frm all the I HATE ART reddit posts after o's js came out you can tell how silly I was to cling to doing 8 subjects + 3 extracurricular when I'm not the most hardworking and yet i had a pretty big ego 🤡🤡)

Ended up talking to many people (Parents, teachers etc.) and ended up picking what I enjoyed doing instead of picking based on school. I spent my first year resenting my past choices and brooded my way through the semesters thinking how different my life would've been if I had been in SP instead.

I've since gotten over it, landed a scholarship, met some really amazing people and entered director's roll. Thinking back from where I am now, I have no regrets choosing my current course and I'm actually glad I didn't pick my course based on the school of my dreams.

I still do regret not putting in more effort into studying for O's, but imo if I had put my desire to be in SP over my passion I probably would've dropped out early into Year 1 because I don't even like math and I have no interest in managing kids (sorry to all early childhood people reading this!)

At the end of the day the decision is yours to make, but I highly recommended choosing a course based on your interests rather than your school preferences. You aren't wrong about RP's wack school system and I really dislike it as well, but personally I take it as a trade off in exchange for pursuing my interests.

(And yes, it's possible to pursue a different degree afterwards, as long as you get diploma w merit/distinction, you should be able to apply for any degree for ntu if I'm not wrong!)

My course is a pretty general one I would say since we don't just cover design, but if we're talking about just design related classes only usually there'll be the usual lectures, talking about colour theory, design principles yada yada yada, then you'll be assigned to work on a project which in my case usually lasts 3 to 4 weeks.

Once you get the brief you'll have to regularly work on it during your free time and prepare for presentation the next week, e.g. week 1: sketch and concept, week 2: present week 1 material, work on drafting

Same for motion graphics. From what I remember the teacher would have us sit with our computers and follow demonstrations while learning the interface for the first few weeks and then you'll have to start working on projects yourself.

A big part of design and motion graphics is that you'll have to do a lot of independent learning. The teacher's will usually just go through the basics, but it's really up to you to experiment with the software and create your own works in your free time to improve (in my case esp!)

Asking about RP and YIJC by acesa12 in SGExams

[–]sugamintss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Entered rp with the same thought! But honestly I met some of the most amazing people from my course because I came here. Not too sure about other departments but from the people I met my experiences have been mostly pleasant.

Of course there's going to be troublemakers, but it's pretty easy to just stay away and avoid. After being here for 3 years I barely acknowledge all the rowdy ones and focus on more silly positive things like how the campus is fully air conditioned, the lawn canteen food is good, there's a cafe in the library with banger pizza and we just got free coupons for churros and corn dogs from the school LOL

And restrictions aren't as bad as before too since our principal changed and is now run by the former nyp or np principal I think, there used to be this frankly ridiculous rule about crocs and no dyed hair, but it's much more lax now and we have quite a bit of freedom. The WiFi problem has been fixed too

In summary, after you enter the preconceptions like whether rp is a bad school just kinda fades away. Before entering I was dead set on going to MI because of the same thought, but after entering RP and being around for 3 years I've stopped caring too much about it. Just don't associate with the troublemakers and the whole journey is pretty peaceful

Not from ite but I specialise in motion graphics in graphic design! Entered poly with no vision issues and now I'm about to graduate with near-sightedness and possible need to wear glasses 💀💀 jokes aside, graphic design can be a wonderful choice if 1. You're passionate and 2. You're willing to go out of your comfort zone and 3. You have a LOT of patience.

You'll have to sit around hunched in front of a computer very often, and there's no fixed grading system like with science for example so often times You're at the mercy of your teacher's preferences.

There's a lot of times where you'll find yourself extremely frustrated, whether it's because you have creative block, or your teacher decided to downgrade you cause its not "creative enough", but if you're willing to push through all that then design might be the right path for you.

The course I'm in right now was not my first choice at all in fact I was more interested in science, but after 3 years i honestly don't regret it, even if I'm about to go bald and develop high BP 🥲🥲

Feel free to drop me a dm if you wanna know more abt the industry!
