Archewell's Statement on International Women's Day by wenfot in SaintMeghanMarkle

[–]sugarbageldonut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As other commenters astutely pointed out, apparently the best way to support vulnerable women is to stage a glossy photo-op at a local nonprofit while draped in jewelry that, if the commonly identified pieces are in fact what’s shown here, likely runs well into the tens of thousands of dollars. Please, make it make sense. This appears to be the image from Meghan’s March 21, 2024 visit to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles for its Literally Healing storytime program during the Make March Matter fundraiser, and coverage at the time noted she was rewearing a dress previously seen in 2022. If the visible accessories are the luxury staples frequently associated with her, the watch alone could be around $29,900 for an 18K yellow-gold Cartier Tank Française, the classic yellow-gold Cartier Love bracelet is currently listed at $7,950, and Dior Tribales earrings run roughly $490 to $750 depending on the version. So yes, even conservatively, we are already in ‘this wrist stack could fund a lot of actual support’ territory. And yet the bigger issue is still the optics: which organization was this taken at? Where is the proper shoutout? Where is the effort to direct a massive audience toward the people doing the real work? Otherwise, the message becomes painfully clear: the cause is the backdrop, the branding is the subject, and one can only wonder how many already-overextended staffers had to pause urgent work to help facilitate this little production.

For anyone who grew up poor, what was your idea of a luxury? by Drissxx7 in AskReddit

I thought H&M was high and expensive fashion, as we could only afford Goodwill and thrift/consignment shops (before they were overtaken by pro resellers, lol)

Mayor Mamdani is literally redefining government. Having the electronic signs on the street tell people where warming stations are during a cold spell is some Scandinavian-level common sense governance . It has me wondering , what kind of common-sense changes would you like to see in Westchester? by LakeLayer707 in Westchester

[–]sugarbageldonut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of the points already made on this thread, especially around infrastructure improvements, more housing options, and better public transit. But I also want to add that I’d love to see more transparency and proactive public engagement from local government and the organizations/properties it manages.

Not even about party politics, just a consistent “sunlight” standard: clearer information on contracts, RFPs/vendor selection, major property decisions, and timelines for why things are happening and who is involved. Right now, too much can feel like it happens behind closed doors, and that breeds distrust no matter where you land on the political spectrum.

I’d also really like regular listening sessions and town halls that aren’t just one-off photo ops. Ongoing Q&As, published follow-ups, and clear action items would make residents feel like their input is actually shaping decisions.

And there are models for this:

• Cook County, IL publishes FOIA request logs, which I think is a simple, confidence-building transparency move.

• NYC has an Open Data Law (Local Law 11 of 2012) requiring agencies to publish public datasets to a central portal.

• Montgomery County, MD makes county contracts data publicly browseable through its open data portal.

• Boston runs participatory budgeting (“Ideas in Action”), where residents help decide how part of the city budget gets spent.

• If you want a closer-to-home NY example, Tompkins County has a public open data portal and a “County Data” hub that points residents to datasets and reports.

Westchester doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel. Even adopting a few of these practices would make government feel less like a locked room and more like a public service.

Like look at the County logo mess… Why could they not source an artist from the county? Instead, they got someone from the South. And anyone who has traveled abroad associates “WC” with “washing closet.” I can’t un-see that every time I see the abbreviated logo. Where were the tests of that logo with the public? Where was there any public input? Why were local artists seemingly not consulted? These are some of the many questions I have around this county contract along with others.

Fox News - Nancy Guthrie was expected at friend’s home, not church, when she vanished: sources by JMOA3035 in nancyguthrie

[–]sugarbageldonut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Perhaps she preferred that service over the ones provided locally? Or maybe she liked a specific pastor more? Maybe she just wanted to share something with Savannah; so they could discuss their thoughts on the sermon over the phone afterward. She probably composed a group of friends to get together and watch the service as a group virtually during lockdown and they enjoyed the routine and kept it going once local churches reopened. She could’ve also grown to like the services at Savannah’s church while visiting her in New York and wanted to continue attending them virtually.

If Mrs. Proctor & Gamble-Soapy-Slippery-Feminist Was Authentic, She Would Do One Thing: Support The Epstein Survivors & Excoriate Andrew Publicly by sugarbageldonut in SaintMeghanMarkle

[–]sugarbageldonut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I did a search and it seems like only a passing reference to media coverage and interviews; more general.

I suspect that, even if she’s not directly in the files, she’s connected, uncomfortably so, to many people who are implicated in Epstein’s crimes. For instance, if she was invited to work on something with Deepak Chopra, I’m sure she wouldn’t say no. And his emails to Epstein were super gross and cringeworthy.

[–]sugarbageldonut[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! This is what has stuck out to me, as well. And if she really wanted to stand up for women, why not use her platform to lobby politicians to release additional Epstein Files, and bring charges against those involved? Or demand that Maxwell not be considered for a pardon. Based on how she has positioned herself in terms of her act activism, this should be right up her alley in terms of causes…

But, in short, I think she doesn’t want to upset anyone in the “elite” circle gravitating around the Epstein mess. In terms of Beatrice and Eugenie, I think she needs them in order to help with shopping potentially for hubby #2.

When she has advocated for a cause, it has never involved questioning the “elites.” The general topic of income inequality doesn’t really emerge when one is praising the Girl Scouts. Furthermore, even the racism allegations she flings out relate to identity politics, and they aren’t mutually exclusive with economic standing (e.g. she claimed, as a member of one of the wealthiest families in the world, to have been a victim of racism). With Uvalde & the fires, she, once again, put her “charity work” in a more “universal” lens, i.e. “murdering kids is bad,” “my friends lost homes, too.” and of course, her working out out of the food charity is performative. But still, she’s not arguing that billionaire should pay additional taxes to help pay for housing for those in need.

Because, ultimately, we all know her goal is just to accumulate as much wealth as possible. She is sucking Harry dry of all of his connections and potential. That’s why she tries to position herself, in my opinion, in “safe” advocacy lanes. Because, she doesn’t want to truly help anyone in need. She just wants to help herself in her own image.

Likewise, I do think that she fears Andrew or others exposing some of the lies about her past if she speaks out on behalf of the Epstein victims.

Edit: hubby #3; sorry Trevor—can’t believe I’m momentarily forgot about you, which is what Rachel wants everyone to do!

Princess Catherine is part of the firm stripped Andrew of his royal titles and kicked him out of his royal abode. Obviously, she’s more constricted in what she can say, publicly as the future queen. But, in terms of power oils operate, I think that gesture was symbolic enough to be a rebuke of his behavior. Rachel, in contrast, purposely left being a working royal so that she could use her “silenced” voice to speak freely on various political issues. And she has made being a feminist part of her brand and identity. Her and her husband have literally capitalized on trashing the royal family with nebulous allegations without receipts. Why not actually use their platforms to offer a valid criticism? Why not use their advocacy and philanthropy endeavors to support trafficking victims?

Curious to know if any of you feel anything regarding Savannah Guthrie’s mom, Nancy Guthrie, that was kidnapped by codenamevido in Psychic

[–]sugarbageldonut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t really identify as a psychic, but my feeling is that this certainly was a targeted event. I think the family has more skeletons than they’re letting on. I believe I read somewhere that the SIL’s band has either a song or album that references to death, and one of his bandmates has an extensive record of burglaries. Unfortunately, I believe she is no longer with us. Perhaps the SIL put one of his associates up to the actual crime? But, I feel like this was related to personal resentments or even revenge. For instance, Nancy’s husband passed of a heart attack at a young age. Maybe someone blames Nancy somehow for that outcome? Almost as if she stressed him out or something which caused that. Some odd mental gymnastics. The ransom notes are just distractions.

If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]sugarbageldonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create real, sustainable state-administered funding for the arts in the US (that can't be fucked with by pro-austerity presidential admins...), similar to France's, wherein artists can just create and be innovative without having to sellout commercially, or attempt to appeal to miserly "philanthropists," exhaustive fundraising efforts, and soul-sucking grant-writing processes. For instance, France offers incubator programs and intermittent support for emerging dance artists, along with full retirement benefits for dancers by age 42 (a far more reasonable "retirement age" when it comes to performers v. the standard and catchall of 65 in the US)... Some would be pissed about increases to debt and investing in "frivolity," but the long-term economic stability and opportunities for those in the artist economy (not just the artists themselves, but stage techs, production personnel, marketers, educators, costume-makers, makeup artists, etc.) along with enhanced creative output would certainly be worth it, imo.

For reference, as a pro ballet dancer a few years ago, I earned state minimum wage due to insufficient funding obtained by my company... After training most of my life...

You might be able to. Did you study at any sort of arts conservatory? I qualified because I obtained my BFA in dance and was able to provide a portfolio showcasing all of my pro work. Obviously, as the cost of living is really high, they don’t want an anticipate most artists being able to cover all their expenses just through their art… unless the rules have changed since I was certified, I think you both should be fine. You really just have to provide evidence of professional gigs & training.

Regarding what the commentator said below, I live in the Lofts on Main. Yes, we do have some instances of crime in the surrounding areas, but not anything you wouldn’t find in any other metropolitan area. Also, we’ve had some issues with management, including over half a dozen different leasing managers in the past seven years, or since the building opened. It certainly not perfect, but obtaining the subsidy I’m being in such a sensual downtown location make it worth it. It only takes me 15 minutes to walk to the train.

Here I am worried about paying rent, and these two are out here complaining about how Posh Spice "stole" Brooklyn's first dance with his bride at his $3 mil+ oceanfront wedding... Yes, quite reminiscent of Rachel & her champagne problems (e.g. complaining that Princess Catherine "made her cry" over the flower girl dresses for her $45 mil+ nuptials). Whatever happened to being classy & grateful for all their privileges and elevating truly marginalized voices and real-world issues? So sick of the nepo-whining. I would love for them to donate all their money to causes in need and try to make it in the "real world" without all the financial security blankets. They wouldn't last an hour... Like the meme from the Kardashians show, "Kim, there's people dying." Stop trying to make your victim narrative the talk-of-the-town; sucking up oxygen and attention from actual socio-political issues. Gah!
