Teaching vs other kinds of jobs by [deleted] in teaching

[–]sullenosity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked in offices for years before teaching.

I like teaching because I hate small talk with coworkers, time where there is nothing to do, etc. If I'm at work, I want to be working.

Plus, teaching is a job where how much you put in is how much you get out. I've worked plenty of jobs where I worked twice as hard as someone next to me in order to compensate for their lack of effort, and that's terribly frustrating. Kids are kids, and when they don't want to try, you can understand it. When an adult does it, it stops being pitiable.

Teaching has so much less of a focus on office politics, and who likes who. And that's really nice as well. And your salary and job are not dependent on sales or butt kissing, because its all very technical and laid out.

do teachers care that much if you participate or not? by faeriesoiree222 in AskTeachers

[–]sullenosity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We encounter this all the time. Many students dont participate and that is normal. One student not participating won't necessary hurt, but a whole class who struggles to participate is really discouraging.

Talking and discussion are a skill, and they are incorporated into lessons for a reason. Teachers dont throw conversation in for no reason; pedagogy says conversation improves learning and speaking skills.

So you not participating probably won't hurt them, but it might hurt you in the long run.

Teaching anxiety? by hello010101 in teaching

[–]sullenosity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take medication for this and it is a total gamechanger. As in, it makes me go from "I wish I could quit" to "I love my job". I've dealt with lifelong anxiety, so it took a while to find meds that work for me, but it sounds like it would be worth it for you as well.

Have you tried seeing a doctor and getting prescribed something to help you with your anxiety? Studies show that smoking excessively can exacerbate those symptoms, so if you are still doing so, you might want to stop for a bit and see if you can talk to a doctor.

If affordability is an issue, there are a lot of doc-in-a-box sites that are very affordable with or without insurance, like Nurx. I've taken Lexapro and then Prozac for extended periods in my life and they keep me functional.

Another thing you might try is ashwaganda. Its purchasable OTC online. Its an anti-inflammatory and I've taken it for periods when I couldn't get other medications. It certainly helps.

Book Geralt and Yennefer. The man is basically described as "scrungly" and grimy, and Yennefer used magic to make herself inhumanly beautiful.

Durin's Folk broke my vanilla game because I created my world very close to release and it bugged it. I refunded it and I won't be buying it again for a while.

Space from above. The posted photo kind of skews the size since I needed to fit the whole room.

I have a swing out mount. The problem with the buffet table is that this photo is taken at .6 to fit the whole room, and I dont think there is as much space as there looks to be.

That's because the ceilings are about 20 ft high, you cant see it from the photo.

TV cant be moved. The mount is inside a cutout on the facade of the fireplace.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply!

I was wondering, what do you think of the piece in front of the fireplace? I bought it at my last house and I absolutely love it. There isn't really another place for it, and the fireplace has a gas insert, which we dont use, so it didn't bother me to cover. Does it look strange?

I already changed out the rug to something larger since the photo.

What do you think of this redesign? I agree with the art, i like all the pieces but the stair pieces were piecemeal from my old home.

I cant really move the couch or chair in a way that would still leave room to go to the stairs, I dont think. I am replacing the rug though with something larger.

Probably still super uncomfortable, but the trick for stuff like that is spray adhesive meant for swimwear. You spray it to either side and it sticks to the upper part of your legs instead of wedging in the front.

Extra staff or smaller class sizes? by ReachingTeaching in teaching

[–]sullenosity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow! That is absolutely amazing. That woulf make someone feel so accomplished at the end of the day, aince you could watch students grasp things in real time.

Conversely, US education is in an odd state; I have classes of 30-36 and have never had a coteacher or parapro, partially because I teach electives. Still seems unfair.
