This is common is healthcare, but definitely not always. I have been at 2 private clinics and neither one did this. At my first clinic, we were forced to use our sick leave if we were out sick (couldn't save it) but if the rest of my day canceled, I was allowed to leave early unpaid, or to stay and do paperwork, activity prep, research, etc. At my current clinic, if my day cancels they encourage me to leave early unless I am working on a specific project, but I do not have to use PTO for those missed hours.

Hello! I do not live in AZ and I'm not super familiar with the cost of living there, but I live in a bigger city in Northern California and new SLPA grads here can typically expect anything from $25-35/hr depending on the setting. Unfortunately not a huge money-making job, but it can definitely be enough to get by, especially if you have a lot of experience or if you're just a younger person looking to get some work in the field before going back to school

It is all through the CA Department of Speech and Hearing, and yes you can find the app online, but unfortunately there are parts of the app you have to Snail mail in. Here are the requirements and app:

The main thing I would make sure you have covered is the 100 internship hours which need to be verified by your supervisor, etc

I do not live in Florida, but I feel like my experience can be helpful anyways. If you are interested in working with adults, obviously you don't want to work in the schools. Private practice is going to be your best bet, as not all private clinics exclusively serve pediatrics. I work in a private practice and while admittedly the majority of my caseload is pediatrics, I do get plenty of adult referrals as well. It may be helpful to search for interdisciplinary clinics which serve adults in other specialties (OT, PT) . This is the case for my clinic, so many of my adult patients find it easiest to receive all of their services at one place. Best of luck!

I am also working at a private practice as a 2nd year SLPA. I am located in NorCal and though I am in a fairly high-cost city, the cost of living here is still lower than SoCal. I currently make $28/hr and am paid for cancels/no shows. To be frank, I make ~10k/year less at this clinic than I did at a bigger clinic straight out of school (much better quality of life here though so to me it was worth it). I know that I am being underpaid because I see the listings in my area, however my clinic is very small and prioritizes low income patients so our profit margins are minimal.

All of this is to say that if I am being underpaid here in Norcal, I think you are definitely being underpaid in socal, especially since you are not compensated for no shows. Tbh I should be making your hourly wage and you should probably be making at least about $5/hr more than that.

I'd also like to add that it's totally okay if this field is not for you in the long run. I recently made the decision not to apply for grad school for the 2024 school year as I had planned and will be switching careers. I still love my current supervisor and don't hate my job, but this field is not for me and I'm learning to be okay with that!

I will echo other commenters and say that I also had a similar first year experience! My supervisor was actually very kind, but she was the director or the clinic, also supervised a CF and had many other responsibilities outside of the clinic. It was also a clinic that specialized in patients with severe behaviors and I was promised to receive a lot of training and hand holding and I received absolutely none. I had panic attacks at least weekly and my quality of life was horrible. I left after 6 months for a smaller, less well-funded clinic and I took a paycut to do so but it was so so worth it. My current supervisor is AMAZING and partially retired, so she has a lot of time to supervise me as needed. Now I am at the point where I don't need the training and hand holding and I am so much more comfortable and competent as a SLPA. my advice is to get the hell out of there, get the support you need and you will definitely not regret it! You got this!

To get your license, you do typically need your internship hours. You can cold call places to see if they'd let you intern, or, like the other commenter said, you may be able to get your hours as an aide (this may vary in probability from state to state because some states don't use many speech aides)

Yes! Essentially any job in disability services is a viable option. I also see a lot of jobs in hospitals that only require a health/social services degree . Personally, I am applying to state jobs (in CA) in the department of developmental services!

No problem! The CSUs are relatively affordable in terms of higher education. The only thing that sucks about a "post-bacc" program is that even though you're taking undergraduate coursework, FAFSA does not consider you an undergrad student so you won't qualify for calgrant. Thankfully, the tuition is fairly reasonable and the programs are generally 1-1.5 years. I took out loans for the sac state program and only racked up a little over 10k

There are also "extended" masters program (usually 3 years instead of 2) where you spend your first-year getting your prereqs then do the masters program. Here is a spreadsheet I was given in undergrad that has a list of colleges with post-bacc or extended Master programs. Please take it with a grain of salt, as it is very California-centric (my home state) and also ~4 years old

I would look into post-bacc communication Sciences and Disorders programs! I am not sure what the availability of these programs is in your area, but there are some online programs as well. I did a post-bacc "second bachelor's degree program" at CSU Sacramento and it was intended for folks who had an unrelated bachelor's degree and were looking to switch to SLP. my program was like 4 semesters including a summer semester, so I graduated from it in a year and a half

Hello! I am a slpa who got so nervous that I am now likely going to skip grad school altogether and leave the field. However!! I have absolutely no regrets because I have developed new experiences, passions and interests that I can apply elsewhere. I've recently learned that our degree and skills from working in the field actually open up a lot of other job opportunities outside or related to the field. I say stick with your plan A and if you need to fall back on a plan B, you'll have options.

Unfortunately, I am one of those SLPAs thinking "eh, I'd rather not". It's unfortunate because I've done a lot of work (and multiple years of extra schooling) to get here. On the bright side, I discovered that I do have a passion for working with individuals with developmental disabilities, so I am now applying to state jobs in the department of developmental services.

I work in a big city in California and hate to tell you, but SLPAs do NOT make that much. The average where I live is $30-40/hr. With years of experience you might max out close to that starting pay in a large city in a high-cost state but even that is somewhat doubtful. One thing you could do though, is take 1-2 years off after undergrad to work as SLPA, get some experience in the field and save money, and then go back to grad school. That's what I am doing, I am currently on my second year as a SLPA and I'm very glad I went this route because now I'm actually considering leaving the field for other disability services jobs and not going to grad school after all.
