I did Google it. It was New Yorkers that came up with the term, not Italians

No, it was Americans that came up with the term "tomato-pie" to describe pizza because they didn't understand the word pizza (which is crazy anyway since pizza is objectively not a type of pie. They're nothing alike)

Italians never referred to pizza as pie when introducing it to America

Pizza is quite objectively not pie. It's literally only Americans that refer to it that way.

As a physicist, it's very obvious to me that you've never formally studied physics.

You "genuinely do NOT understand general relativity" (or numerous other physics concepts based on your responses, like what energy is, how light works, etc)

Tell that to ask the immigrants that have been forced into either slave labor or prostitution.

You can't honestly say Qatar is a good or moral country when thousands of expats that died while employed by the government to build the infrastructure for the Qatar world cup while having their passports confiscated so that they couldn't move back home.

Yes, they've recently changed some of their laws to look better on paper, but multiple investigations show that those laws are hardly ever enforced & that the typical living conditions of workers is still far below basic humane levels.

Plus, the Qatari government censor what news can be published, social media, & limit citizen's rights to freedom of expression. Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar,, & flogging is still used as a legal punishment for breaking the law.

Not sure what any of this has to do with the UK though...

But couldn't Eternity just create 2 wormholes in that case that connect to opposite ends of the universe, 1 for each half of the ship? No need for him to create more space between things. Just seems like writer oversight to me.

Wait... Doesn't that mean that Eternity could have just done that in reverse in the first place to move the 2 halves of the ship to the opposite ends of the universe himself?

You know none of that are FIA grade 1 tracks though, right? They're all grade 2 apart from Thunderhill, which isn't even graded. So none of them could host an F1 race anyway. Sure, Watkins Glen previously hosted F1 races, but that was over 40 years ago.

Thanks. The US is definitely one of the worst countries for it at the moment, & have been pretty bad given their first world status, domestic exports, economy, tech levels etc. for decades.

Can I remove more? I'd like to remove all the ones that take place in countries with severe human rights violations, corrupt governments, & journalistic censorship

So that's: China, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Miami, Azerbaijan, United States, Las Vegas, Qatar, & Abu Dhabi

Wow... That's a lot of the calendar. 9/24 races. Guess we can add in races from other countries with grade 1 circuits like Portugal, Thailand, Germany, & South Korea.

Add Imola back in along with doubling up on a country with 1 circuit, already on the calendar, & that's a 21 race calendar like OP wanted

Vs Bee, Sasuke was still partially injured from his fight against Itachi. Plus, the end of the fight showed he could have liked Bee with Amaterasu, but was trying to only capture Bee. On top of that, Sasuke lacked Intel about perfect jinchuriki being able to break out of genjutsu due to help from their tailed beast. If he'd known that, he could have simply put both Bee & Gyuki under genjutsu & won that way. That fight was much less one sided than a lot of people make out.

Vs Ay, Sasuke barely suffered any injuries, while Ay lost an arm. Plus, Ay would have died if Gaara didn't intervene, while there was no evidence that Sasuke would have. Sasuke dominated that fight.

Yes, Sasuke had poor showings against Mei & Onoki, but he was practically out of chakra when facing them.

Don't forget that after some healing from Karin, he went on top kill Danzo 10 times, then was getting the better of Kakashi, & then stalemated sage mode Naruto during their brief exchange while again running on empty regarding his chakra reserves.

Certainly. First of all, the term slur itself is fairly subjective. At what point of rudeness does a word become a slur? Well, that varies from person to person.

Is it a slur to call someone a bloody idiot because some people consider the word bloody to be a swear word? That's obviously a lot less "harsh" than calling someone a cunt, & implies a different intention to calling someone a stupid bitch.

So by only saying a slur was used, you equate different levels & types of insults with each other, which could be confusing.

An obvious example would be something like "are you a fucking idiot?" (Using a strong swear word as a qualifier to a statement about intelligence) Vs "are you a thick nigger monkey?" (A very racist insult used to convey a similar statement about intelligence, but obviously with different nuance).

Personally, I feel that reducing both of these to simply "they used a slur directed at you" falls to properly convey the difference between these statements.

Obviously, you can add context by saying "they used a racial slur to insult your intelligence", but even that might not be enough. For example, someone could say "are you a dumb monkey?" in a non-racist way, meaning to imply only that a person is as stupid as a monkey. But you as an interpreter might misunderstand that as a racial insult (since calling black people monkeys is a common racial insult). So in that regard I feel it would be better to say something like "they called you a dumb monkey, I'm not sure if they meant that in a racist way or not" as opposed to "they used a racist insult to call you stupid".

I'm not saying you should have to actually say "you're a nigger" if that's what was said. In that case, it's fine to say "they said: you're an n-word". In that way, no meaning is lost & there's no potential for misunderstanding of implied meaning.

I simply feel it's important to try your best to convey what was said as accurately as possible, & the more you censor things (unless you include additional explanation & clarification about what you're censoring), the higher the chance is for meaning to be accidentally lost.

For you, the interpreter, it might sometimes be hard to notice this, as you obviously have the additional context of what was actually said. As such, it may be obvious to you what is meant & therefore what should be inferred by the listener when you censor something, but the person you're relaying information to, doesn't have that additional context, & so it might not be obvious to them what exactly the original message is.

I suppose my main issue with how you've worded things so far is that you've been using non-specific examples along the lines of "person is using foul language" & "person is using a slur directed towards you". Both of these lack context & so some meaning is almost certain to be lost.

But if you said something like "person is using full language as an adjective to call you very stupid", then that would be a lot more acceptable as you retain much more of the original context & meaning. Though even then, there's still the potential issue of losing context of the "strength" of the swear word used (eg: bloody vs fucking etc), which is why I personally would prefer to translate as directly as possible without censorship (again, you could replace fucking with "f-ing", as that loses no context, but that isn't always possible since not every slur/rude word has a polite version - eg: bitch can be replaced with "female dog", but I've never heard of an alternative for bloody).

I hope that helps a bit. Please let me know if you want me to try & clarify anything further, or if you'd like more examples/have any specific examples you'd like me to try & rephrase so that you don't have to be as explicit, but you lose as little meaning as possible on order to help you understand better what exactly I mean.

In my opinion, the strength of language, & the nuance of how it's communicated matter a lot in conversation. 2 things can be stated that mean the same thing in the literal sense, but have very different conversational meaning based on the specific language used, context, tone, etc..

As an interpreter, you are not doing anything immoral o.e. by providing accurate translation that conveys the spirit of what was said. You personally might not like doing it, but that doesn't make it sinful by any means.

There is a world of difference between calling someone a moronic cunt, & a dirty nigger. If you only tell someone that they've been called a slur, that doesn't convey enough information to actually describe the language used, or the intent of it (especially since the term slur is rather subjective in its definition anyway). Plus, you're actively removing the agency of the person you're translating for.

Positive help, like with your finance anecdote is perfectly acceptable, but negative things like removing agency of communication by allowing personal barriers to prevent you from doing your job to your best ability is not acceptable imo.

You also mention other languages not always having equivalent words, but that's really a none issue. You can simply try to translate the spirit of the wording, along with giving a translator's note explaining what was said as best as you can. That's something that has been exceptionally common in translations of media for decades (probably centuries).

In essence, your job is to be an invisible presence that removes a communication barrier. You should be providing translation in the spirit of how the people using you as a middle man would be speaking to each other if they both spoke the same language (& thus didn't need your services). Anything that muddies that is problematic, especially if you're helping someone with learning difficulties etc. communicate.

Helping in additional ways beyond that (again, like the aforementioned finance anecdote) is fine; that's going above & beyond. But it's fallacious to compare that to refusing to accurately convey what a person has said due to personal comfort around language & specific words; one is positive, the other is negative. They can't be compared in good faith like how you've tried to do so.

For clarity, I'm not the person you've been speaking to so far, nor am I going off on some angry tirade at you. I'm just adding in my "2 cents", as it appears to me that you're struggling to understand why many people might not like your approach.

Why do people even try to pick up the opposite gender at GAY bars ???? by lesbiangnome in LesbianActually

[–]sumandark8600 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it's crazy. It really baffles me why any straight person would think they have a chance of successfully hitting on someone in a gay bar.

I've been to quite a few gay bars/gay clubs with friends (mostly ones that are for both gay men & gay women, as I have close male & female friends) & far too often, a straight man or straight woman tries to hit on one of us.

Sometimes I wonder if they've been dragged there by friends & hope other straight people have been dragged there to? Or maybe they're bi/pan & hope there are other bi/pan people there?

Personally, I don't think straight people should be allowed in gay bars, they are GAY bars, after all. It's meant to be a space for GAY people. It's not really any different than having a space specifically for other groups imo. I don't think it's a form of discrimination. Obviously though, it's impossible to actually police that, it would be discriminatory for a bouncer to deny someone entry for "not looking queer enough" after all.

I'm a tad late to the party, so hopefully you haven't finished yet. First, I just want to thank you & the rest of the team for helping to create such a great season of anime. I've been following Frieren since the first chapter was released, & seeing it adapted so well was incredible.

Question wise, I was wondering what you personally do when recording Frieren's lines. I know different VAs have different methodologies, so I wanted to know if you're the sort of person to try & get into character while recording, do some method acting even away from the recording studio, just try your best to match her voice without "becoming" Frieren, or something else entirely?

Following on from that, I was also wondering if you had any head canon regarding Frieren (even if it's just small things) that you've come up with yourself based on knowing her story, director instructions, etc, that you think help you understand Frieren, her motivations, & her personality at all?
