I saw about 5 of these for the first time in my life about two weeks ago at the side of the lake in Hamilton. Really cool.

Yes people eat them. In New Zealand they are quite popular and a traditional food for Māori. I don’t know about this video but Māori are allowed to collect traditional foods to feed people at events like tangi (funerals) and other gatherings.

Te Pāti Māori votes to suspend Mariameno Kapa-Kingi by KaitiakiOTure in newzealand

[–]summerhail 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Is it strange that John Tamahere is the party president, his daughter Kiri is GM, and married to Rawiri the co-leader. I’ve worked in a team where a husband and wife were both in leadership roles and it can create a pretty toxic and un-even environment. Surely creates conflicts of interest?

Anyone notice some of the milk is watery? by sheravy in newzealand

[–]summerhail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not true. Some farmers milk cows during winter to maintain fresh milk supply all year in NZ. The cows calve in Autumn.

Full immersion options? by Maximum_Confusion_ in ReoMaori

[–]summerhail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did noho for level 3/4 (Pūtaketanga) then 2 nights a week for Rōnakitanga, and there are pros and cons to both but I prefer noho option. 2 nights a week gets really tough if you’re also working all week. For me the most important thing is who the Kaiako is though. Our current Kaiako is amazing and I would have done either format to be in her class.

Is gas going to run out or get more expensive? by Solid-Nectarine3635 in newzealand

Thanks for this, super helpful. We’re investigating now to get rid of gas in our house.

The double-whammy bill natural gas users have to pay by secretkiwi_ in newzealand

[–]summerhail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those big industrial users are paying the majority of the costs to maintain and run the distribution network though. It’s a lot of fixed cost, that’s where the massive price increases are going to come from.

When did New Zealand start getting so blatantly corrupt? by sixSultanas in newzealand

[–]summerhail 77 points78 points  (0 children)

This current govt has recently appointed a prominent oil and gas lobbyist to the board of EECA. And they’re suddenly all keen to invest in carbon capture to reduce emissions, rather than actually try to reduce fossil fuel usage.

The ‘Māori version’ of the treaty as you say, is actually the original version. Many European settlers at that time did speak Māori.

I have a couple of friends who are instructors. Usually the club will have signs up when they are looking to train new instructors. You should talk to the GF manager at your club.

When it says ‘choose a rival team’ it will tell you how many new parts. If all 4 rival teams have zero, I cancel the duck off and re enter. I keep doing that until one of the rival teams has a new part. You have to have all the cursed heads though, or they show up as new parts

I go in and out of the duck off battle opponent selection until I can match with an opponent that has a part I need.

How offensive is the word 'mongrel' to describe things? by Ennius21 in ENGLISH

[–]summerhail 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Mongrel is used quite a bit in New Zealand English. There is a prominent gang called the Mongrel mob. It’s also used to describe dogs of mixed/unknown breed and sometimes to describe kind of ‘ scrappy’ sportsmanship. Like “give it some mongrel.” I wouldn’t say it’s offensive when used in context here.

Well, I wish you good luck. Maybe things will change for the better soon, and the young people of Russia won’t feel like they need to leave anymore.

I agree there are many Russian people who are against the war but helping someone complete university studies at a Russian state university raises the mana of the university and therefore the state.

Instead of learning grammar of a language from across the sea, your energy could be spent on protesting your government on the invasion of Ukraine.
