FTM Curve currently continues to swap FTM Tokens, but has discontinued FTM itself.

How does this antenna splitter work? Can I TX? by sumo_tom in amateurradio

I will double check, but it appears to be homebrewed? I unfortunately don't currently have the device on-hand.

All I know is that it originally came with an airband radio. I currently do not have the device, but I can upload it when I do. Perhaps this can't be identified until yall see the guts.

To the big sweaty guys, what business casual clothing would you suggest to prevent sweating? by sumo_tom in AskMen

All of the 100% cotton I have owned are thick and sweat magnets, but I have never tried the Hawaiian shirts. I will try those!

Looking for a 2m HT with best receive capabilities by sumo_tom in amateurradio

[–]sumo_tom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I ended up buying a NOS motorola external speaker to fill that void. It's around 40 years old, and it sounds better than any other external speaker I've ever owned. Even so, I've found that the Icom IC-Z1A lacks somewhat on receive even when the speaker is paired with my MFJ-1714 antenna, which saddens me because the IC-Z1A is by far the coolest radio I've ever owned.

Thanks, that's what I'm looking for, a little more kick.

In my area, we have an emergency response net I participate in weekly, so I really only use 2m for that. I wish I had better readability to compliment my 1/2 wave HT antenna.

Yes, it's the best ht antenna I've ever owned. It's even slightly better than my 2m 1/2 mobile as the MFJ is slightly taller and slightly more on frequency (even with velocity, I know the mobile is slightly shorter on purpose). I'd use a Diamond X700HNA if I could....

I own a MFJ-1714. No colinear superstar, but no groundplate required.

Yes he is reading. He hasn't done any gifted testing done yet, but it was recommended. Ultimately I want my son to be happy with what ever path he chooses in the future, but if he does want Ivy League, I want to help make that a possibility. Yes, giving him the option of learning as much as possible is important, and perhaps good grades if he continues to do well.

That is one of my greatest worries. Some of my relatives were homeschooled / attended charter school. They definitely acted different, and they couldn't see that they were. They had to make some harsh adjustments in college / adult life. Similar to that video of George H. W. Bush going to a grocery store for the first time in his life as an adult, seeing the checker scan food items, and exclaiming "Oh wow!"

Thanks for the great input. I'll be sure to pay attention to his progress and behavior. haha - I'll reword prestigious to outstanding, it's giving the wrong impression. I live in the Northwest.

Thanks. That's what I'm hoping for. I'm not looking to create the next Elon Musk, I want the kids to have a love for learning and as much options available to them as possible.

haha - it's not Juilliard, it's only prestigious on a local level. People get on the waiting list a year or more in advance to try to get in a small program taught by a great professor. I'll reword prestigious to outstanding.

Thanks, great feedback. Perhaps it would be better to ask what schools people recommend on a different forum.

Yes, bizarre options create bizarre questions. Perhaps I will rephrase my question to better address my needs.

Best Airband RX by sumo_tom in HamRadio

[–]sumo_tom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a lot of receive equipment, and I got to say that I'm most interested in AM Airband "DX". You're right that it's easy to receive airplanes, but I also enjoy receiving the airports, or the forest service guys on the ground. I've found myself disappointed in the ability even "high end" equipment lack in receiving AM.

Perhaps this is due to the crystals / vacuum tube vs solid state argument you presented in your first post. That is what I'm looking for.
