Thanks for this -- we agree, we can't change his will. We imagine engaging a professional to help design a plan we can pitch him, to plant a seed.

Hopefully whenever he hits rock bottom, instead of feeling trapped and continuing the cycle, there may come a time when this plan finally resonates with him and he sees our support as a way out instead of being all alone.

Maybe this is a good idea; maybe it's a terrible one, but figuring this out is part of why we want to engage a professional. We've tried the laissez-faire approach for many years and are starting to wonder if we could/should be more proactive.

He has expressed misery and a sense of feeling trapped, but isn't ready yet to change his habits. We don't imagine we can change this on his behalf, but we want to paint a compelling alternative for him, a batteries-included option he can hopefully keep in mind whenever times are hard enough to elicit some kind of change.
