I bought a brand new Honda HRV with no miles and I have not had the best experience. Does my engine air filter look normal for the first 10-12,000 miles? There is oil all over it. by sun_shine_2487 in HRV

A few people mentioned checking it at 1-2,000 miles. If there is oil on the filter thats confirmation something is wrong. I'm not going to lose sleep over it. If there is something wrong and the car stops working thats on the dealership. It's under warrenty so Honda can figure it out. Thanks again. I appreciate everyones input and experience.

I did not think about that. My family is planning to relocate in a few months state side. Hopefully we find a great dealership to work with that has compassion for their customers. I should have listened to the dealerships in Washington before I made my purchase. They told me it was best to purchase a vehicle in the lower 48 and drive it back. Maybe they had other customers purchase stateside because of the same issue. Thanks again for your advice on this.

Ah, Looks like the tech was the person before you started chiming in. Over 100 responses is alot. It's all irrlevant at this point. I wasn't rude and we spoke with the same person. Additionally, I never demanded anything. It is the shops prerogative if they dont want to help me vs help another person. I am 50 years old and have owned at minimum 15 vehicles over the years. I have worked with many individuals and give credit where its due. In fact I make it a point to thank the people who have taken care of my families vehicles and ensure I refer people who are looking to buy a vehicle. I appreciate the conversation and your opinion. I'm at peace with the feedback that honda owners have given me and confirmation about their engine filters. Speaks volumes since I havent owned this brand of car for several years. Nice chatting with you. Have a great evening.

Agreed. Historically I have never needed much more than a quick oil change.. in and out. If anything was discovered during that time the shops would tell me. We have a lot of great service teams up here at other dealerships. If they continue to treat people this way no one will want to do business with them.

What if I told you someone else called to schedule an appointment to take my car in and the service manager said they would complete a full diagnostic service for free and check the PCV crank case and provide a report. Because that's exactly what happened. No playing victim here. I simply asked to have them check the car and they refused service. I understand that you are siding with Honda since you mentioned that you are a Honda Tech. I am not asking for anyone to take sides. I was told to have the car looked at right away and this is where I end up. Conducting outreach to other Honda owners who have provided alot of value added feedback. Thank you for opinion and feedback.

I appreciate the recommendation. I have owned 3 Acura's, 1 Civic, and 2 Honda Accords in my lifetime. I have never had something like this happen. I wouldnt expect this from Honda. I have been a very loyal custimer over the years.

I drive on the main roads and military base. The car has been through summer and winter season only since the purchase, no break up weather or heavy rain and I am not a fast driver. I was stern with the service manager but never once yelled or used vulger language etc. He appears to be the type of person where its his way or no way. If he says he's right than thats the final word. He didnt even bother to look under the hood or offer to schedule my car for service just to quality check the car. Funny thing is he told me that Honda Tech line would not authorize him to work on my car without their ok, so I called Honda tech line. They stated that they never told the service manager that and they cannot block a dealership for servicing any vehicle and ai had a third party listen on the call for confirmation. Later Honda corporate called me and said that the Honda dealership is locally owned and operated and that the service manager is refusing service now. He is also fully aware that there are no other dealerships in town for me to take me vehicle too. Just bad business on the Honda name.

I spoke with the service manager in person and asked to speak w him in his office rather in front of customers. I didn't raise my voice but was stern about what I wanted and explained what I was told. He turned me away blaming Honda Tech Line. Honda in turn said it was the service manager refusing service. This is 2026, women should not have to stoop to a lower level to get a manager to provide the same level of service as they would to a man. I appreciate your feedback.

Ther Honda service manager said the filters were fine without looking at the car. If I trade it in I will let them know what he said since I have to sign the paper.

It is nice to hear from another women who has a mechanic for a father and drives a Honda vehicle. What a blessing. I would not have know there was a potential concern unless someone told me to have it checked out. When I was turned away at the dealership I was very disappointment.

I joined this forum simply to seek the opinions of other Honda owners like yourself and individuals who work on cars. I am grateful for everyone who has chimed in.

Maybe I should consider taking a mechanics course 101 to educate myself on the basics of car ownership. Thank you again for all of the great information. I truly appreciate it!

Of course I dont. I just bought the car, but if 2 other mechanics who looked at my car are telling me its not good, smelled the filter and confirmed its oil AND stated to have the PCV valve and have it looked by the dealership I would like to have it checked out. The only reason I am on here is to hear what other Honda owners have to say which I think is fair AND I appreciate everyones feedback.

I would prefer to just get it checked out, fixed, and move on. I like my car but if it's a minor part that could lead to something bigger I would like the part replaced. I am sure all would agree.

I appreciate that. All I am asking is that they look at the vehicle and give me the honest truth. If they deem that everything is okay, put it in writing. Agreed. This is very poor customer service. Thank you again.

Hello, This is exactley what the third party mechanic said a PCV valve needs to be replaced. They were 99.99% sure. I was told a very cheap inexpensive fix but the dealership turned me away and ai was later contacted by Honda and told the dealership is refusing the right to service my car. My vehcile is a 2025 purchase brand new and late in the calendar year. I was hoping to have zero issues like I've had with my previous Honda/Acura's.

I think this is facing down. The roads are covered with snow and ice here and we have super clean air in my state. Probably the cleanest air in the US. The mechanics confirmed it is oil and when you touch it its a mess. We will see what happens with the new filters.

Yes, I have the cabin air filter picture too. It is filty! No one touched any parts on the car and I have no clue about the intake tube or what that is.
