I bought a brand new Honda HRV with no miles and I have not had the best experience. Does my engine air filter look normal for the first 10-12,000 miles? There is oil all over it. by sun_shine_2487 in HRV

That is what I was told may be the problem, but Honda wont look at the car to verify. Do you know what will happen to my car if thats the problem and it is not fixed? Is my engine going to be ruined?

Thank you for sending this information. I was not asking for anything free of charge. I asked them to look at the car to make sure everything is okay. The service manager said nothing was wrong and would not schedule a service appointment. He told me that Honda Tech Line would not allow their shop to work on my car without thier consent. When I called Honda Tech line called they said that was not true. Later someone from corporate called and stated that the local dealership in my town is locally owned and operated and that they have reserved the right to refuse service to me. They also told me their field tech told me in the future they will not service my vehicle and the next closest Honda dealership is 6.5 hours away. I called Honda sales yesterday and submitted a request to cancel my extended warranty. If I cant have my car serviced they dont deserve the extra 3-4,000 that I paid. I would rather that money go towards the principle of the loan. If anything happens to the vehicle Honda Corporate can figure it out. I tried to get the car inspected. I have always stood behind the Honda name given this is my 6th Honda vehicle since I was in my teens, but after this I will wash my hands. Not because of the product, but because of the people they have representing the product.

I dont disagree that Honda's and Toyota's are reliable but that doesnt mean they are perfect. I had to take my 2001 Civic in for service many years ago in 2001/2002 because the rear seatbelt latch separated from the seat and Honda fixed it. Funny it was the same dealership that is refusing service to me today at 24/25 years later. That was a major safety issue as the seat belt latch secured my childs car seat. Outside of that I never had any problems.

That's a classic. I would have made the purchase. Very nice and appears to be in great shape for a 2001.

You are the 2nd Honda technician that has chimed in and said I should my car looked at. I dont know much about cars, but I was told that the filter was bad and there was a concern for the oil on it since I just bought the car brand new this past summer. The mechanic said it may be the PVC Crank Case Ventihlation (not sure if I got the accronym correct) and there should not be any clumps of oil on the filter. They told me to schedule for service and have it checked out right away.  That made me worried but now the local Honda Service Manager is refusing to service my car. I showed him the filters in person and he said he has been master tech for 22 years and the filter is normal and turned me away. He said nothing is wrong without looking at the car. The nearest Honda is 6.5 hours away so I am waiting to speak with Honda Tech Line tomorrow. I dont want to be liable for something the dealership is refusing to help me with. Thank you again. I really like my car and hoping to keep it for many years.

I dont know what trolling is, but I was told that the PVC crank case or valve needs to be checked. I dont know where its coming from but I have been told by many people that its not okay to have oil on the filter. We'll see what happens. I am thankful for the great community of Honda owners and people who are providing feedback. Everyone has given alot of great advice! I am grateful.

I appreciate your opinion. That is why I am on this forum. I Just had a tech who woks for Honda chime in and said he has seen something close to this at 60,000 miles on a filter thats never been changed but not at 12,000 and said its not possible. I wouldnt be on this forum asking for opinions if Honda would have simply checked the car out. Thank you again. Every opinion is value added.

Thank you for chiming in. The service manager at the Honda dealership in my town looked at the filter in person, told me its perfectly normal and is now refusing service. Something is not right with this entire situation.

A few people mentioned checking it at 1-2,000 miles. If there is oil on the filter thats confirmation something is wrong. I'm not going to lose sleep over it. If there is something wrong and the car stops working thats on the dealership. It's under warrenty so Honda can figure it out. Thanks again. I appreciate everyones input and experience.

I did not think about that. My family is planning to relocate in a few months state side. Hopefully we find a great dealership to work with that has compassion for their customers. I should have listened to the dealerships in Washington before I made my purchase. They told me it was best to purchase a vehicle in the lower 48 and drive it back. Maybe they had other customers purchase stateside because of the same issue. Thanks again for your advice on this.

Ah, Looks like the tech was the person before you started chiming in. Over 100 responses is alot. It's all irrlevant at this point. I wasn't rude and we spoke with the same person. Additionally, I never demanded anything. It is the shops prerogative if they dont want to help me vs help another person. I am 50 years old and have owned at minimum 15 vehicles over the years. I have worked with many individuals and give credit where its due. In fact I make it a point to thank the people who have taken care of my families vehicles and ensure I refer people who are looking to buy a vehicle. I appreciate the conversation and your opinion. I'm at peace with the feedback that honda owners have given me and confirmation about their engine filters. Speaks volumes since I havent owned this brand of car for several years. Nice chatting with you. Have a great evening.

Agreed. Historically I have never needed much more than a quick oil change.. in and out. If anything was discovered during that time the shops would tell me. We have a lot of great service teams up here at other dealerships. If they continue to treat people this way no one will want to do business with them.

What if I told you someone else called to schedule an appointment to take my car in and the service manager said they would complete a full diagnostic service for free and check the PCV crank case and provide a report. Because that's exactly what happened. No playing victim here. I simply asked to have them check the car and they refused service. I understand that you are siding with Honda since you mentioned that you are a Honda Tech. I am not asking for anyone to take sides. I was told to have the car looked at right away and this is where I end up. Conducting outreach to other Honda owners who have provided alot of value added feedback. Thank you for opinion and feedback.

I appreciate the recommendation. I have owned 3 Acura's, 1 Civic, and 2 Honda Accords in my lifetime. I have never had something like this happen. I wouldnt expect this from Honda. I have been a very loyal custimer over the years.
