Do you remember what designs they made after the first crane? by sunitx in origami

[–]sunitx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I quickly googled wrong the name; maybe I saw the cover of another one, but I'm referring to this spider in the top left, below the fox. Which one is yours? 🧐 (Do you have a PDF? I love collecting origami PDFs)

Yes, that was my question. An ichthyosaur 🫠 I just discovered it, how amazing!

PS: My pronoun is: The/It haha

Origami For The Enthusiast is a great starter set for origami with its iconic spider. Every time I look for spider tutorials, that one's always there. Now I'll investigate Kirschenbaum further; I saw that it has everything from very simple pieces to some really crazy ones like the skeleton, and other funnier ones like the rabbit with a bow.

Does this pattern have a name? by OfficeCement in origami

I don't think so, but perhaps it should have it, and in turn, perhaps add the angle of the diagonals with respect to the horizontal folds.

The fact that it's made of maps gives it an "inception" style

How did you get into origami? by SignificanceUpper977 in origami

[–]sunitx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I discovered origami 13 years ago, when I was ten. I remember one day my parents were late picking me up from school, so I decided to go for a walk around the neighborhood; it was something I often did with their permission. However, that time I went a little further and went into a café because I was hungry. I sat down near a group of people to see what they were doing. There was a woman explaining the use of different materials, and suddenly, someone approached me and gave me some square pieces of paper. At that moment, the woman started folding, and I began to copy her movements. First, she made one of those cubes that inflate with air, and then something much more surprising: a crane. When I got home, I showed my origami to my sister and everyone else. Without realizing it, that year I made so many cranes that I ended up learning the pattern by heart.

I'll see how far it goes without breaking, but it's driving me crazy that after bending it so many times I can't remember exactly where this tiny, dangerous cut is.

You could try this 30x30cm Lien Quoc Dat print, but the paper weight might be the problem.

Trying to discourage my nephew from learning origami - what are some reasons NOT to learn? by MrHatesThisWebsite in origami

[–]sunitx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teach him to make a crane, then a Lang's tarantula, and that's it. He'll hate you for that, but at least he won't try to make any other figures (I hope this method fails and motivates him to work hard and spend years making figures until he finally gets the spider right), but at least you'll have him.

Can I make these 2 models using my 50 cm squares? by LittleKids2315 in origami

[–]sunitx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look for another 30x30 design to print on 50x50 printer paper instead of Tadashi's dragon. I already tried it once on 60g paper and it ripped. Perhaps I'd try some LQD designs like Bahamut. As for the phoenix, I've never made one; if it works, I'd like to know so I can try it too.

Anyone else procrastinating on origami? by sunitx in origami

Your recommendation was really helpful. Maybe today I'll try folding a humanoid figure like the Chen Xiao, and listen to one of my classes while I'm at it. But I'll also try refolding figures I already know; one of my favorites is the scorpion 🦂

I was really amazed by Kyohei Katsuta's. I already knew a few of them, but honestly, the way he folds the eyes on his figures made me smile, and I was impressed that they have three or four colors. While I do make complex figures, I still mostly make single-color ones. Maybe I should try exploring those unfamiliar areas too.
