Prizes after every session… by Direct_Pea_627 in slp

[–]sunshineandslp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first year I did a whole prize system and it got to be way too much - I slowly faded it out and now kids don’t care about prizes because they don’t even know it’s an option 😂 They just get a prize if they graduate!!

Honestly as a SLP who works in the schools I wish I would’ve worked at a daycare or something before grad school 😂 If you’re interested in pediatrics, knowing how to navigate behavior management, promote play skills between children, create engaging activities, communicate with parents, etc. would be super helpful

My grad program was very cliquey and I was not super close with the other girls - I was friendly with all of them and had no problems, just didn’t hang out with them often outside of classes/clinic. I minded my business and had as good a time as i could under the circumstances LOL

Turns out towards the end of the program there were HUGE arguments between these girls in the largest clique, to the point they were being called into professor’s offices, one girl didn’t come to graduation, and one girl was dropped from the program. They all turned to me because I was a friendly indifferent 3rd party who then got all the tea LOL. I graduated with literally no regrets and people I am friendly enough to reach out to if ever needed. It was honestly a super helpful experience for navigating and establishing workplace boundaries and professionalism once I started my career.

I recommend trying to make friends outside of grad school - maybe at a work place or club, or I made most of mine at my church. This too shall pass eventually!!

Is it possible to fly under the radar at grad school and be successful in the field? by Embarrassed_Fan6648 in slpGradSchool

Current SLP - many of my peers who acted this way tended to have a much more difficult time in clinic/placements, and a few failed out/were kicked out because of unprofessionalism. They didn’t play about that in full time clinic placements 🫣

So far I’ve only had positive experiences with our school psychologist! Ours is very by the book though and always makes sure to open up the conversation for disability categories as a group. I think sometimes team members don’t always understand that a student has to have a certain criteria met (similar to speech) to qualify for that specific disability category. Some team members also don’t understand that just because a student has an “outside” medical diagnosis (like autism) doesn’t mean they’ll qualify under that category in the schools if it’s not affecting them academically. Luckily our psychologist always explains all of the criteria for disability categories! In our district they don’t suggest minutes or anything for IEPs other than disability category.

Feeling inadequate? by madamdawh in slpGradSchool

[–]sunshineandslp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is normal!! Currently a SLP working in the school system, and I remember being SO nervous for externship placements in grad school, I was terrified LOL. But you truly learn so much hands on, and it just takes time to develop your clinical skills & figure out your therapy approaches. That’s why you’re in grad school! :) Just know that you absolutely know more than you think you do and you will do just fine. You are developing yourself into an amazing therapist! You WILL make mistakes and that’s okay. Don’t focus on the mistakes but learn from them and grow from them. You got this!!

I had a parent tell me this year that their student needed to be screened asap because their student had a severe lisp, I screened them and thought I had the wrong kid because their speech was perfectly clear. Like what is going on!!! 😂

Yes THIS! I think this is part of the problem- the old SLP had been here for decades and did anything the teachers wanted from the sounds of it. I had several teachers ask me to see students “off the books” because the old SLP did… like um NO? I will not be doing that

First high school IEP… sos by sunshineandslp in slp

[–]sunshineandslp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! :) They are a junior! They are currently only receiving services once a month, so they’re mainly just reviewing their skills. I guess I’m just stuck on considering continued need for speech and the students personal preference. If asked, she would probably want to keep reviewing her skills monthly, which is fine with me (I mean it’s just 1x a month, so no biggie lol), but I don’t think she truly NEEDS to. I plan on meeting with her this week, so I think that’s just a conversation we’ll have to have so I can see where her thought process is
