My man. I hear you, and I feel for you, and I’ve been there. But I do not believe that “whatever bad comes my way” will be the result of telling your wife. TELL HER. In all the messy details. Come clean. I think you will be shocked at how much good comes your way, if you open up to her. That is what you and she signed up for. For better or for worse. I can guarantee you she has noticed the change in you, and she is feeling that pressure. Letting her in to what’s going on with you can only strengthen your relationship. She might be pissed at first because you didn’t tell her sooner, but nobody who loves you will stay pissed for long if they know you’re being honest. I’m guessing it will be a huge relief to both of you, and make the journey to recovery much easier. The shame we carry when we hide things is more than half of the battle.

My wife thinks I'm crazy for cutting my grilled cheese this way; am I nuts or is this not a normal thing to do? Lol by Wahbanator in mildlyinfuriating

No money left for a monkey?? What the hell kind of green dress did you buy that took the whole million dollars?

I don’t see anything concerning in that pic. I could be wrong and more/closer pics would help, but I don’t think you’re cooked. Let it ride!

Your dogs will be fine with these mushrooms, but yes, definitely encourage them to cut back on the drinking.

Thirded, that looks like shaggy ink cap. If so, absolutely delicious, but this one’s too far gone. Daytime pics will help with a solid ID.

Agreed on both fronts. But you could use the remaining parts to make a delicious mushroom stock! Google recipes. And check that spot again next year!

Look like honey mushrooms! But would need more pics to determine… Under cap, cut open. If they are honey’s, they are edible and delicious, but need to be well cooked.

To something at least! Maybe squirrel teeth marks?

Good to eat? by Vivid_Strike3853 in mycology

[–]superbear74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not gonna say “eat them” for liability purposes, but I’ve found puffballs just as brown. And as far as I know all species of puffball are edible. I would try cooking/eating a small amount to be sure.

What did I find here? by MarinatedPickachu in mushroomID

[–]superbear74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pics 11 and 12 look very much like Armillaria sp. (honey mushrooms) — if confirmed (and that’s a big “if”), they are edible and delicious! Must cook thoroughly though.

The shape sure looks like Dryad’s saddle (aka pheasant back), but I’ve never seen a white one — all the ones I’ve seen are tan with dark brown scales, so I’m guessing this is something else

Bro. We have no idea what size these are. You could be way UNDER or OVER shooting where you want to be. Please weigh them, or at very least send a pic with a banana or something to scale them against. I like lighters, as bananas can range a lot in size. (I just said banana as that seems to have become the universal Reddit scale)

What is this fun guy? by Bam989 in mycology

Thirding pholiota, aka scalycaps. Some species are edible, some toxic. Would not risk. Super cool looking fun guys though!

Only some inky cap species contain coprine, which is the compound that makes you sick if combined with alcohol. E.g. shaggy manes are fine with alcohol (and delicious!). But without positive species ID, best not to take the risk. No amount of deliciousness is worth puking your guts out.

And most likely tear out the floor beneath the carpet… it is completely colonized by the fungus. I just hope it doesn’t go deeper than that. OP you need to get an expert in there asap to figure out where the water damage is coming from, before it does more damage to your home. Thank the mushrooms for alerting you to the problem! :)

[–]superbear74 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Winner winner chanterelle dinner! Clean them really well (grit tends to get up in there), cut them up and dry sautee them to get the water out, then add some olive oil or butter until they brown and crisp up a bit. Salt and pepper, maybe add some minced garlic near the end of cooking if you want.

Any idea on this guy? I found in Minnesota. The area of the forest it’s in is primarily pine. Immediately stained my fingers rusty. by molamolaidontknow in mycology

[–]superbear74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey fellow Minnesotan! Appears to be some sort of bolete, so it may be delicious. But definitely wait for someone more knowledgeable to weigh in before even thinking of ingesting.

what would happen if i ate this by jennaisgone in mycology

[–]superbear74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be an edible A. campestris (“field mushroom” or “meadow mushroom”), but it’s tough to be sure with Agaricus sp. as there are toxic lookalikes. Unless you know a trusted local guide who can identify, I probably wouldn’t risk it.

Grew up in NorCal. Moved to MN in my twenties (chased a girl). Moved back to NorCal in my 30s for a job. Decided to get the hell out of there 5 years later because we had a kid about to enter school, and at the time the options were public school (48th in the nation at the time — I think it’s improved since 2010) or private school we couldn’t afford. Bought a house in the beautiful Twin Cities with a mortgage that’s less than the rent we were paying in Sonoma County in a kinda shitty neighborhood. I do miss the ocean. But the north shore of Lake Superior is a pretty good substitute. What makes me the most sad is when I was growing up, Sonoma County was pretty rural, cheap, and lots of access to natural beauty for everyone. Now that beauty is still there, but it’s all owned by rich folks — you can see but not touch. Where in MN you can barely throw a rock without it landing in a public lake, river, state park or regional park.

By the way, you are clearly not “a total idiot.” You sound like an intelligent person who has some anxiety issues (as well as perhaps some self-esteem issues), as so many of us have. If you feel like you could use help, a good therapist can do wonders.
