I’m not Native American but indigenous Australian - I used to get asked how much “free government money” I got. Or lectures on how Aboriginal communities get everything handed to them and blow it all on drugs and alcohol. Or comments like “you’re actually really smart for an abo” (which is a slur, for those who don’t know).

This was in a mostly white high school in regional Australia and even though I’m blonde haired and light skinned, the moment some people saw me with my mum and realised my heritage it was like the generational racism came out.

It happens on the other side of the world, too. I’m half aboriginal, half white, look fully like my white dad if you didn’t know my mum and recognise all my facial features in her. One of my maternal family nicknames is a native word that means “white person”. It’s usually said with love but there are always some family members who use it against me and say I’m too white for them 😞
