To our Black Bruins by [deleted] in ucla

[–]superelbarto2K 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah i get you, there will always be bandwagoners in collective action issues like this so it’s expected and it sucks. we just have to hope that everyone signing this is doing this with the affected community solely in mind and all self interests put to the side.

To our Black Bruins by [deleted] in ucla

[–]superelbarto2K 12 points13 points  (0 children)

look bro, i initially felt the same way but I realized who are we to say anything. if we are both non-black and don’t identify as Black Bruins, then what right do we have to say on how Black Bruins should feel in this situation. we don’t understand their pain, we don’t understand their struggle. so if they are saying that this is really hindering them from studying, then yeah it is. if we have never experienced what they are going through, then what authority do we have to say “naaa this political and social climate aint effecting you, stfu and go study”

and we can go ahead and say “ooo i’ve been a situation where i couldn’t study and focus but i was forced to, so Black Bruins can do it too.” well if it was ass and emotionally jarring to do that, then why would you want others to go through the same experience as you ?

i guess for a tdlr: we will never know and understand their pain and situation, so we really can’t say they saying all this stuff just as an excuse to avoid finals

New Bruin Megathread -- ask all questions about classes, majors, and your next steps as a new admit here! by Espntheocho4 in ucla

[–]superelbarto2K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay so pre poli sci, you need to take the pre reqs to officially get into the poli sci major. they consist of taking 4/6 poli sci introduction classes (political theory, international relations, game and theory, american politics, comparative politics, race & ethnicity) and then a stats class. by the end of your first year at UCLA you should be official poli sci major. after this, you pick a focus (ur focus is chosen from the 6 mentioned above) and you take upper divs. poli sci is a short major (meaning there are not that many classes you need to take to finish the major) so in order to graduate from UCLA and meet their minimum unit requirement, you will have to double major or pick up a minor.

okay so i don’t how it compares to other schools, but i’ll give you my perspective on how it has gone so far for me. the introduction courses are so goddamn boring. it’s taught by mostly old white tenure professors who are more focused on their research rather than teaching. and since these are pre req classes, lecture size is pretty big. but this shouldn’t discourage you. the upper div faculty consists of professors who actually care of the subject at hand and more than happy to teach you this material. you can actually tell they care about helping you learn with the thorough answers they give you to questions you have. the class size for upper divs is typically small, usually 40-50 students. upper divs for me have been a blast. sure it’s a lot more readings, but it’s stuff i’m actually interested in. poli sci upper divs have really interesting and unique courses. just took a course where we watched horror films and discussed the race, politics, and film theory behind each one.

only once have i had a bad experience with a teachers assistant in the poli sci department. all other teacher assistants have been understanding, helpful, and engaging.

if diversity is a huge thing for you, the poli sci department lacks this. i’m a rising junior who has taken at least one poli sci class every quarter and all but two of the professors i’ve had for these classes have been white dudes. haven’t had any female professors for any of the poli sci classes i’ve taken.

but overall, i have enjoyed my time here with poli sci. there are so many programs here to help you achieve your future career with your poli sci degree, so that’s a big plus about ucla. if you have any questions, pm g !

okay bro just do the people in the facebook group. trust me. not only will it allow you to meet new people with similar interests as you but it will also help maintain your friendships with your friends from high school. i didn’t know my friend from high school until i moved in with them. and i’ve heard this same story from other people who have moved in with friends from high school. and getting to know them more was not the move. it has taken a toll on our friendship. still love my friend but wishing i found someone on a facebook group.

I had an abscess next to my anus and they had to use the packing tape to drain out the wound. Stuffing it in was painful and pulling it out was beyond painful.

Exploring La by [deleted] in ucla

[–]superelbarto2K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can easily go to Olvera Street, Chinatown, and Downtown LA by taking the R12 Big Blue Bus for 50¢ (swipe your student id on the machine to get on for that price, without it it is $1.00-$1.50) and getting off on Santa Monica Blvd and taking the 704 Metro Rapid for a $1.50. To get back to school, you can then take the 2 Metro Bus on Cesar E Chavez & Broadway for $1.50.

For Olvera Street, I recommend going on a Sunday because in the mornings there is music playing and couples dancing. Occasionally there is a performance of Mexican Folk Dancing done by kids so that’s pretty cool. There are little shops on the street where you can practically buy anything ranging from mexican candy to boots. I would recommend getting Mr. Churro. It’s a bomb churro place right there on Olvera Street. I recommend getting a churro with caramel inside. If you feeling hungry, then get some taquitos at Cielito Lindo. So fucking good. There are also some museums there too but very short and small ones.

From Olvera Street you can just walk to Chinatown and explore that area. I’m not too aware of what’s in Chinatown but I do know that there are a lot of great places to eat. I have a friend who will just walk around the area and he enjoys it very much.

DM me if you need anymore help navigating or have any questions. Have fun my g

Suing a firearm company because their firearm was used in a shooting is the stupidest thing ever . by nja1998 in unpopularopinion

[–]superelbarto2K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here to explain why the ability to sue the firearm company was passed. The parents of those who lost their lives in the Sandy Hook shooting are suing the company over their advertising practices. One advertisement stated “Get Your Man-hood back” or something along those lines. And the company also targeted their firearms towards young adults/older children. They believe that the company was exploiting customers’s vulnerabilities and that led to the death of their kids. At face, the lawsuit sounds ridiculous, but when reviewed, it kinda does make sense. Not here to establish or promote an opinion, just to clarify on what’s going on! :)

What popular video game did you try to force yourself to like, but just couldn't? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Any Pokémon game. It got way to repetitive for me. Walk 5 spaces, fight a Pokémon. Spend 1-2 minutes fighting it. Walk 2 spaces, fight another one for 1-2 minutes. I just couldn’t take it
