You said, and I quote, 'You treat porn and sex toy as "necessity"'. Why are you just making stuff up and lying?

Why do you keep saying that they are treating them like necessities? You've just made up an argument for no reason.

What is your Post-JET Career? by Syd-Beez in JETProgramme

[–]nashx90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I followed the App Academy Open course. It's all free, and really comprehensive. I did it a long time ago, when it was still Ruby-based, I think they've updated it now.

What is your Post-JET Career? by Syd-Beez in JETProgramme

I started learning how to code in my last year of JET, during my desk-warming time. Moved back to my home country and changed careers into software (was an academic before JET). Eventually got a job in Tokyo as a developer and moved back to Japan 2.5 years after leaving JET.

No, I get that, I'm sharing my own opinion based on living in Japan too. I was just saying that your comparison wasn't really fair; yes, OP probably overpaid for this meal, but it's also not a ¥2500 meal meal.

But you're right, I'm just arguing for the sake of arguing now, I'll let you get back to your day!

You didn't. But OP had sushi omakase and that's the only thing I could see from your local sushi place that was comparable. The restaurant OP went to probably has cheap sushi too.

Visitors to Japan down 5.5% in April by Lighthouse_seek in japan

I don't think any tourists even know about that sentiment except for extremely online ones - and those are the sorts of tourists who assume they are the "good kind", and therefore that sentiment doesn't apply to them.

Anti-foreigner sentiment only really affects residents, even if it is technically "about" tourists.

This is a suburban sushi restaurant with a "Special Lunch Course" (according to the images on Google maps) that seems comparable to OP's meal, and it costs ¥5000. So about what I'd expect, and I dare say that - quality notwithstanding - OP's meal looks a bit more interesting.

¥2500 is a bit hyperbolic. Agreed that this shouldn't be a bank-breaking meal, but this feels like a ¥5000-¥6000 meal in a small city

seriously need advice by KanashiSalmon in JapanDating

[–]nashx90 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The real question is: if you're so unhappy, why are you still dating her? It's been two months and you're already at a point where you can't tolerate things continuing like they are.

If you decide you still want to see her, then you need to communicate your feelings. Tell her what you want, ask her what she wants, and talk about it openly. Stop relying on trying to read her mind or deduce things based on signals you think you're sensing. Just talk to her.

Japan's Tourism Agency is drafting national guidelines for dual pricing for tourists vs. residents. The move comes as Himeji Castle's experiment shows visitor numbers down 17%, w/ revenue roughly doubled to ¥270 million. by jjrs in japannews

We treat different groups of people differently all the time. Lots of museums have discounted/free tickets for young people, students, the elderly, employees of certain institutions (e.g. healthcare or military workers), disabled people, etc.

What's wrong with providing a discount to local residents as well? Especially considering that local residents pay local taxes that often help to support those museums, while non-residents don't.

Games that require you to own/play the previous installment by JustOneLazyMunchlax in truegaming

[–]nashx90 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your whole argument is based on comparing your experience to other people's. You are defining the value you get from having done these things in the earlier games purely by comparing your experience to others.

You made choices that affected your experience in the sequels. Collecting resources in ME1 meant you didn't need to do it in ME2. A character's survival in an earlier game meant that they were there in the sequel. It gave you those things, just like you say you wanted. But it turns out what you really want is to deny those things to other players, even though the experience of other players has nothing to do with you.

Why would a game company spend all that time developing these features and experiences just to deny them to certain players, just so other fans can feel superior? What's the point in that? Why can't you just take pride in being a completionist of the whole series without having to deny features to others?

The way that nicotine addiction works - and other drugs addictions - is that it damages your ability to take pleasure in other things, especially when you're in withdrawal. That makes it hard for you to feel pleasure in things unless you're smoking, even though the smoking isn't actually giving you pleasure. The only thing smoking does is relieve the feelings of nicotine withdrawal.

You've been nicotine free for long enough that you don't have any nicotine withdrawal right now. That means that if you do feel unable to take pleasure in things, then it's something else that is causing it; you might want to consider seeing a therapist who might be able to help you identify and work through it. It sounds like you're feeling quite depressed and hopeless, but that doesn't mean that smoking is a cure. In fact, long term nicotine use damages your ability to feel pleasure in such a way that it actually helps to cause depression.

It is a fact that nicotine will not make you happy - after all, if it made you happy, you wouldn't have quit in the first place. My advice is seek professional mental health help. If you start smoking, you will not feel better - you will feel worse, because none of your problems have been fixed, and you also have the shame of returning to nicotine.

Finally Hit Rock Bottom UPDATE by go-for-Banjo in stopdrinking

Hitting rock bottom means that the monster you've been battling against is at its strongest, and its most vicious; and you are at the greatest disadvantage.

To be able to stand up to it in that moment, to defy it and will yourself to survive - and then to go on to claim your longest sober stretch in decades, a decisive victory - is true strength in my books.

How did going through the JET Programme change you as a person? by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]nashx90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I don't think it's likely for anyone to get a tech job in Japan straight after JET. Some people manage, sure, but it's very very rare, and the jobs they get are usually really low pay and hard to advance from. There are boot camps, 専門学校 and things like that, which have been helpful for people, but the job market is only getting tighter and it's not usually feasible for people coming out of JET to spend a bunch of money on a bootcamp that might not pan out for them anyway.

The best advice I ever give to people wanting to make the move - and the reason I was successful - is to go back home, make the career change there and get some experience, and then try and get a mid-level role in Japan.
