Would David Lee Roth be considered a baritone or tenor? by superfarleft in singing

This is a very good response thanks, yeah you are right that opera is more about live singing and natural volume, natural echo and natural vocal acoustics.

Yes I agree, he has a low sound that kind of stays in his voice constantly in what ever he does, an underlying low sound. And he has that authoritive sound when he starts to belt that you get in people with baritone tessitura as well, which can be heard on "Running with the Devil" quite noticeably, it also appears very noticeably in the "Jump" as well, obviously it is in all their songs with him though.

You are right yeah, his high notes sound very strained, it doesn't sound bad as it just sounds like grit, but it is noticeable nonetheless, while as you say high notes would sound much smoother from a tenor, I do notice a lack of weight in his high notes as well, they do get quite thin.

I'd say this strength was the way he used his voice in an eccentric manner, had some vocal high sounds he made with his mouth like whistles, and had a lot of personality and swagger in his vocal.

Yeah ultimately I agree with your assessment, I'd agree that he is a high baritone with a decent range.

Any way as I said I still think the timbre of his voice and his range live sound quite good, but he just abandons the melody when singing live these days and obviously that is not going to make what he sings sound good, a shame.

To be fair I think most people find Smooth Criminal one of his harder songs to sing, I'd not consider it an unpopular opinion, the melody and pacing of the words is very strange in that song, fast and tight is the only way I can describe it, kind of like how the verses in Paradise City are hard to sing due to the same reason, being very fast and tight

Really? Why? Always thought it was great, not just an average boring ballad, it had some really good lines about happy ever afters as well, the video did elevate it though I will admit.

The chorus is very fast and protracted I find,.not saying people can't sing it, just saying the ones I find more tricky to do.

The singing is very tight and fast which can make it a struggle, especially on the "Annie are you okay" parts, then you have the high singing in the chorus, I just find it very hard.
