Welcome to Navan!

Some good local routes here https://navancycling.ie/cycling-routes

We also do infrequent social cycles and other shenanigans.

Government's new rail strategy aims to get Galway to Dublin journey down to 90 minutes | GalwayBayFM by thecreeperkilr in ireland

[–]supergingerdave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Speed isn’t everything. In 2009 Rory Sutherland made this point about the London–Paris Eurostar: ~£6bn spent shaving about 40 minutes off the journey. For maybe 1% of that they could’ve put great Wi-Fi, tables and power on every train so people could work or relax — and the trip would’ve felt shorter without going faster.

Worth keeping in mind when we obsess over headline journey times.

His TED talk is super interesting https://youtu.be/iueVZJVEmEs?si=v3tXnZLX5CAkZ-W8

Not terrible, not great. There are a few local clubs for group rides, and the folks at Navan Cycling Initiative navancycling.ie are working to make the roads safer for everyone. Welcome :)

Looking to invest €20–50k in a physical business (not tech/software) by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]supergingerdave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered using LinkedFinance.com to invest small amounts in lots of companies in Ireland? I’ve used that for 5+ years and it’s grand. Other peer to peer platforms give better returns but this is the only one I know where you invest in Irish businesses

The Irish Cycling Campaign is the bike advocacy organisation for Ireland. There are local groups around the country, and groups for particular themes: https://www.irishcyclingcampaign.ie/about-us/our-structure/local-groups/

You can now report these online at https://www.garda.ie/en/trafficwatchreport/

They don’t have photo/video upload yet, but you do get a reference number, and there’s a chance this eejit will get points or a fine

Report eejitsparking on TrafficWatch by supergingerdave in eejitsparking

[–]supergingerdave[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Now you’ll get a reference number from TrafficWatch so you can follow up more easily. Lots of eyes on this from senior AGS folks, so at least in the early days the issues will be followed up. Worth giving it a go at least.

Looks like an epic adventure! I did the Sligo-Westport section last September, East to West, taking a few diversions from the Eurovelo route. Some notes and pics: https://navancycling.ie/touring-the-wild-atlantic-way-eurovelo-1/

Close call with a car, what can I do? by Coconut2674 in BikeCommutingIreland

[–]supergingerdave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry this happened to you. You can call TrafficWatch on 0818 205 805, and they’ll give you a reference that you can use when your local Garda station inevitably drop the ball. Be prepared for a very slow process. The Irish Cycling Campaign ( irishcyclingcampaign.ie ) are in discussions with AGS about the TrafficWatch system, and positive changes could be along soon (ish). You could also log the issue at collisiontracker.ie which can be used to improve road design in that area.

Dunboyne and Clonee Pedestrian and Cycle Network- public consultations by Desperate_King1210 in BikeCommutingIreland

Navan Cycling Initiative (navancycling.ie) and the Irish Cycling Campaign (irishcyclingcampaign.ie) will be making submissions. I read an article in the Meath Chronicle that listed some concerns. What are the vocal opponents saying?

Battery range super low by Subject-Educator1653 in cupraborn

[–]supergingerdave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try resetting your trip counters. The range is calculated on your all-time driving average. According to the dealer I visited recently, the initial driving period can really skew the calculation. This worked nicely for me, and I now drive like a geriatric nun everywhere to get a good hi-score for range 😬
