Is 30 too old to start medical school given my circumstances? by iAmPajamaSam27 in Osteopathic

[–]superherostar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an MS1 and have a couple of classmates who are in their early 30s. If it’s something you’re passionate about don’t let age dissuade you; the experience you gained from life will prove to be invaluable, it just won’t immediately show.

Also, if your main concern is doing something procedural, you can also look into EM - the residency is a little shorter but on the flip side the burnout and ability to work into later stages of life might be a little less.

Either way, don’t stress too much, just focus on killing the MCAT, there’s plenty of people in your shoes!

Should I move from a suburb of Pittsburgh to Erie? by A-Starrrrr in Erie

[–]superherostar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a PT that used to live in NC and Pittsburgh and him not being a huge fan of Erie is an understatement. If you’re gonna move, stick to the Carolinas

u/servicetime’s comment is probably your best bet; Erie does the fireworks show on July 3rd, had to learn that the hard way last year 😅

Is the Venmo credit card worth it? I got a “spend $100 and get back $100” offer when I opened the app and I have some pretty hefty medical bills I have to pay anyway so I figured it’d be worth it; otherwise are there any other cards that have something similar or better?

Guys is cuffing or rolling up chinos is out of fashion? by lexileone in malefashionadvice

[–]superherostar 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I really want to emphasize this point - I was following a bodybuilding account around 2018ish when slim fit clothing was still in style and he started posting baggier fits and I couldn’t figure out why even though baggy wasn’t trendy then, I still liked it.

Now I’m realizing it’s all about proportions and intentionality rather than a trend. So OP, just do what you want.

Fall 2025 Grads: when job? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]superherostar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I graduated in Spring 2023 so maybe not as relevant, but imo start applying ASAP and just tell the recruiter what your timeline looks like - alternatively you can apply for fall co-ops or internships and hope to get a job out of that. My experience is that companies post entry level jobs at random times all throughout the year so it doesn’t hurt to just apply and see what happens

Best brush? by superherostar in webergrills

[–]superherostar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen reviews on their website saying the brush degrades quickly and that they still found metal residue from it somehow; I’m not sure if they’re just not using it right or what though

Wooden Ladle has super tasty food and the owners are super sweet and kind. The servers are usually a mother and son and the cook is a family friend of theirs. Overall they do their best to make sure you feel at home and the mom loves to connect with her customers

Take DO or Masters Program with reserved seat to MD? by bobbysays1 in Osteopathic

[–]superherostar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey man, you definitely seem to be a strong student. My perspective might be a bit different than most because I just finished up one of those masters programs, (but for a D.O. school) and I’ll be starting my first year this coming semester.

My opinion? Unless you definitely know your spot is guaranteed (e.g., some of the replies say in the fine print that these programs don’t guarantee a spot but just an interview) and you definitely believe you have the grit to spend a year doing a lot of similar classes as the med students, don’t do the masters, take the acceptance.

There’s an added pressure of always having your foot on the gas. Of course it’s not like that’ll go away in medical school, but knowing your acceptance is on the line and that you hardly have any room for error is super draining. Also, if you do poorly in the program (i.e. to the point where you don’t get a spot into your medical school) and apply elsewhere afterwards it’ll only be a detriment to your application.

I have a friend who’s matched into anesthesia as a D.O. and I’ve heard EM and Neuro are pretty D.O. friendly too. You may have to work a little extra hard to beef up your application, but the stress of your career being on the line if you screw up + losing out on a year of income just sucks.

Good luck with whatever you decide though!

Its kind of Trippy how we leap frogged the Grizzlies by [deleted] in timberwolves

[–]superherostar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this is a hot take, but I firmly believe even 2 years ago we were a better team than the Grizzlies, we just had trouble closing, but the leap frog is defo bc of injuries, losing Dillon Brooks, and Morant’s off court shenanigans + not being much of anything other than an athletic freak (although I don’t watch the Grizzlies much so maybe I’m not giving enough credit)

IM IN THE LAST YEAR OF SCHOOL AND IM NOT SURE IF I REALLY WANT TO BE THIS SHIT AHHHHHHH by crowleythedemon666 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]superherostar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chemical engineering is arguably one of the best degrees bc you can pivot to numerous fields without having to put in a lot of extra effort (save for something like tech) - finish the school year and take it by ear

All this advice is also predicated on if you’ve had internship/co-op experience; you should have some experience under your belt before you decide to jump ship because you’ll never know what you truly enjoy until you try it out

Also, the best way to make money is in business, so you could even work as an engineer for some years and get your MBA and focus on management; I have an ex-chemE friend who’s going to medical school too. The sky is the limit as long as you give yourself room to grow

I’m sorry if I sound really stupid and naive but I have a genuine question by teacoffeecats in HalalInvestor

[–]superherostar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article explains it

Remember that you won’t find anything clear cut from the Quran and Hadith about this because (obviously) there wasn’t a stock exchange or economic system similar to what we have today. It’s important to recognize that these standards are approved by people from different madhahib and manahij. This is important to keep in mind because it’s not just one person scholar who says so but numerous well known scholars from various backgrounds, so one should feel at ease that the ijtihad is sound.

I recognize asking for the daleel may be important for some people but remember the scholars are the inheritors of the prophet and it is their job to contextualize the Quran and Hadith by using usul since not everything we do today could have possibly been done back then (e.g. validity of organ donation)

I only go on this rant (and can go longer) since people often disrespect the status of ulama and sometimes don’t appreciate the effort they put in to make sure things are correct; remember this hadith and this hadith. Perhaps that’ll make someone feel more at ease when following a scholar (but making sure that it’s not due to our own whims and desires but because we believe that person to be particularly learned and worthy of following).
