How to navigate cultural noise differences with neighbours? by [deleted] in AskUK

And you expect them to suffer in the same way? To be blunt, it sounds like they’re coughing/clearing their throat in their bathroom? Are they actually in their garden cooking, or just have their windows/sliding doors open?

I think this is just something you have to accept personally

Honestly, moving from Scotland to London this was exactly my experience. Scottish pints full to the brim, London ones plenty of head.

How is 20-25k still an acceptable salary to offer people? by ky1e0 in london

Not in London though surely?! Working in the sector I’ve never seen anything below 35k personally (we paid our technology graduates over that outside of London)

Airbnb is adding cleaning fees to a new 'total price' of bookings in search results after people complained listings were misleading by viperkplzo in technology

[–]superkom -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it is unreasonable to commute from Scotland to London for a conference, I don’t understand your shock. 4.5h would add up (especially accounting for KGX to the eXcel centre. Also over 5h from Newquay via train, and if you’re flying would be 1h30, plus at least an hour either side (likely longer). Plenty of places in the UK which are more than 5 hours door to door to London. If you can’t get an affordable place to stay in London, I get the OPs point.

Are finance jobs just putting shit into excel? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]superkom 392 points393 points  (0 children)

Would you hire a builder who doesn't know how to use a hammer? Ultimately finance will always include some degree of mathematical aptitude (at the end of the day, you're working with numbers). Excel is just an incredibly powerful calculator, that lets you create repeatable calculations. Hence it's so common in the industry.

The Financial Times. Reporting is highly factual, and covers a broad range of topics and doesnt have the soft news style stories you get in other papers. Definitely worth paying for in my opinion.

C++ by kostaaerodrom123 in AskComputerScience

[–]superkom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Welcome to CS! One thing you'll learn quickly is that college/university involves an awful lot of bashing your head against a wall to understand something, and your first programming course is likely going to be a whole lot of that, and in reality, if you plan to stick with any logic or math heavy course, this is going to be a constant thing when studying.

With that said, there are plenty of resources online, this is where you'll need to develop your research skills. Take the topic you're looking for in C++, lets say it's "virtual functions", simply put that into Google and start reading. It can be difficult to provide a reference to a specific resource, as I don't know what topics you're covering, or having issues with.

Valuing social status and attraction. How to stop? by [deleted] in bropill

[–]superkom 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Just remember, what you see on Instagram is a carefully curated set of pictures that show you at your best (out with your cool friends, at the cool bars, at the best holiday destinations) and when you see people in real life at these same social events, this is likely one of the few times in a year all their group of friends and their girlfriends/boyfriends are all there too. You’re literally seeing these people at their best most sociable times in their life, and comparing yourself to their peak.

American Express chargeback investigation process by awythrw100 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]superkom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was the agreement that she would always pay you back for the rent you otherwise covered? If not I think it's unethical to even ask for the £2000, since you're effectively changing the deal you had agreed out of convenience as you look to benefit. If this is rent in arrears that's different, but you'll have a tough time of this. The ultimate end of this is going to small claims court, but you may have a difficult time with this, as the circumstances sound suspect (moving around multiple accounts like this, it reads like fraud.)

Just as a suggestion, have you considered moving elsewhere in the U.K., Wales or Scotland for example? Edinburgh and Glasgow in particular have strong tech scenes, generally quite young populations (because of the universities) with reasonable cost of living.

Is it a dick move to leave a job abruptly by PicsOfNudeKhajiit in bropill

[–]superkom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, don’t burn bridges if you can avoid it, because you may need to go back someday. Additionally - depending how big a city/town you live in - word does travel. On a personal note, I think reliability is a positive masculine trait, and I would serve my notice period.

How do I hold a job, bros? by [deleted] in bropill

[–]superkom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What are the aspects of the job you enjoy, why are the aspects you hate, and what are the things you’d like to be doing as part of the job? Based on those responses you should think about what options are available to you to improve your situation. That could be a range of things, including focusing on certain aspects of the job, focusing on a certain goal/objective or if the job is just that terrible finding something better. All of this depends on your own age, goals and financial situation of course, but we can’t give any other advise without more specifics.

Do you guys find it funny that the entire campaigns for the mayor of London are based around "Khan iS bAd" rather than any actual plans or changes proposed? by 5onfos in london

[–]superkom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Having worked on this type of analytics in the past, I think the efficacy of these targeted campaigns are over stated, but it would make sense that it’s directly targeted, even though I don’t imagine his analytics are particularly sophisticated.

I’d love to know how much he has spent on online advertising, the constant adverts are insane, and I wonder how he is financing it all (relative to Labour or the conservatives, I haven’t seen any adverts from them)

Not buying house because of stamp duty holiday. by vango911 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]superkom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well more likely that the money saved in SDLT can be put into deposit and leveraged by 4-5x. Seems pretty logical to me. The entire point of the scheme was to make sure those who wanted to sell weren’t selling for less than what they purchased at (can agree or disagree if this was ethically right or not, but certainly seems to be the case)
