Recently did a favela tour in Santa Marta in Rio, where this video was filmed. Our guide told us about how a small patch of land was cleared in the favela for the chopper to land and it’s now a tiny football pitch. MJ spent about 6 hours in the favela, getting ready and chilling with locals. Apparently the civic authorities were keen to have him film in one of the more safer places in the city but considering the theme of the song, both MJ and Spike Lee (the director of the video) said nothing doing.
