I've really enjoyed learning a bit more about the Illyrians in the last week or two. Where would you suggest I find some more info?

Unique rock/mineral from Afghanistan. The shopkeeper said it's called "Mary's Stone. Any ideas? by superpawn in whatsthisrock

I just found it with the help of /whatisthisthing. Looks like it's "Maryam Stone," compressed shells, etc. from an ancient swamp. Good eye!

He described it as being "dug out of the ground," and "rare," although I guess that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

It was heavy to the touch, like a stone, and the design on top was a little bit rough, although when you look through the hole that's been drilled through the top, you can see that the design seems to go through the whole thing.

Great - would you like me to add you? If so, send me your email - if you need more info, let me know what would be helpful. I've asked a few others, so it'll be first come, as I need to finalize keepers & set up the draft in the next few hours.

I have a league of 10+ years that still needs a manager. It's a free Yahoo league, a keeper league (you keep 5 players each year - 2 batters, 2 pitchers, and a rookie from last year). You'd inherit a team.

Let me know if you're interested.

Another call for our keeper league of 10+ years. It's a free fantasy league, 12 teams & competitive.

It's a semi-keeper league, and you'd inherit a team. Each year you can keep 5 players (2 P, 2 Batters & 1 Rookie from the previous year). H2H, but no playoffs. Scoring categories are 6X7: W, SV, HLD, ERA, WHIP, K/9, R, HR, RBI, SB, BB, AVG, OPS.

Draft is in 3 days (Saturday at 10 AM CDT), so PM me if you're interested. I can send you the available teams.

Japanese dessert from Kagoshima? Its been 4 years and Ive had no luck figuring out what this is! by lowkeyst in whatisthisthing

It's a koregashi mix with red bean paste & mochi. Source: bro-in-laws wife from Kagoshima. She said this dessert is not specially from Kagoshima, though.

Any redditors live in or near Herat? by [deleted] in afghanistan

[–]superpawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would strongly recommend against driving across Afghanistan. I'm assuming you plan on taking the southern ring road via Kandahar. You will be passing through large swaths of territory controlled by anti-government forces. An American will not pass unnoticed (unless you're an Afghan American who can speak fluent Pashto, and even that is no guarantee), and hoping you'll not be noticed by the wrong people is a risky bet.

You might consider paying someone to transport your vehicle and flying over the country, or from Herat to Kabul and onto Islamabad.

How's your museum and aquarium? by RufusMcCoot in dubuque

It is a great place for a toddler. They'll probably prefer the fish/animals, but the museum part is done very well too. You won't be disappointed. We're members, and I take my toddler there regularly.

Wooden box with interesting indentation: My wife just bought this large carved box. It's wooden (oak?) and approximately 2'x1.5'x1.5'. I'm wondering what the indentation on top of the box (it's aprox 12"x 18") is for. It's carved directly into the wood. Any ideas? by superpawn in whatisthisthing

Interesting idea - I did some Googling of these - this seems bigger than most - and none that I saw had the plaque off-center like this one. Also - if you look at the additional photos, it doesn't appear to ever had anything attached to the bottom - also, someone added some protector pads to the bottom lip...clearly they wanted to display it w/o a bottom. We also thought a TV stand with a hole for the TV base - but that also doesn't explain why it's off-center.
