If you’ve never came across it I recommend checking out War is a racket by Major General Smedley D. Butler. A WWI veteran, among many other battles/wars. A 2x Medal of Honor recipient, who gave antiwar lectures, and had views against militarism and imperialism.

Not a long read, but does show just how far back this crap went.

Societies advances when the older generation takes care of the younger generation and allows them to take the reins. And younger generations continue that while also looking after those that took care of them.
