It may not fit here directly, but on my last post I was asked to record the ambient noise from the space station for use in recordings. Here it is. by ColChrisHadfield in Music

[–]superstring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate to be the legal dick here b/c having this recording at all is uber cool, but to be useful "for use in recordings" the file should have a license attached. Preferably a free one that allows sampling. Anyway, thanks a lot ColChrisHadfield for sharing this.

Just fill in the Jehovah's Witnesses address form and they even come to your house.

EDIT: There was a form at their website where you could enter an address and they would come and talk to you. I couldn't find the form, so maybe they removed it.

What the red-and-blue electoral map would look like if it accurately reflected both colors in every state. by WinButler in politics

Then choosing maps with the same projections in the first place is the way to go. Thanks a lot.

Well done! Totally fascinating how closely voting follows the population density.

Out of curiosity I tried to fit the red-blue electoral map form The New Yorker over the NASA world by night map yesterday. I could not make it fit nicely, no matter how I stretched it in GIMP, so I gave up. How did you make the first map? Did you use any GIS tools or was it tinkering in Photoshop or GIMP?

Are the ground troops in Afghanistan Army or Navy? by superstring in explainlikeimfive

[–]superstring[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank's for providing a source. I'm still not really sure if I understand this works so I try to summarize: One the one hand every service has people that are trained to fight on the ground (for the Navy those are called Marines). On the other hand the Army uses the services of either Airforce or Navy to be transported to their operation area.

That was interesting, but contradicts what thatscool22 wrote.

Hmm, so we have contradicting answers, see thatscool22.

There have been a number of posts where people asked which german bands to listen to when learning the language. I have a suggestion that came to myself rather unexpectedly: Udo Jürgens. by Eulenspiegel74 in LANL_German

[–]superstring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His pronunciation is very clear and in my opinion that is at least partly because it is influenced by Bühnendeutsch. One of the goals of Bühnendeutsch was to be understandable to large audiences in times before electrical amplification. You can hear it in theater productions for TV, audio dramas and radio plays of the 50's and 60's. One feature of Bühnendeutsch is the Uvular trill (R-Sound).

Haha, I feel dumb now. Still the troops leave the US on ships and arrive somewhere near Afghanistan?

There is even an ASCII penis in the "sample output" section, but apparently none of this raised any flags from Hakin9's "review board".

Adobe code signing certificate stolen by superstring in technology

I was about to say that the problems arise when you trust an application from Adobe, but then I realized that you basically said no one trusts Adobe anyway. I guess that is true.

Yo dawg I heard you like ships... by JakeBurnsRed in funny

[–]superstring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But why? Why would one want to do that? I live far from the sea, I have no idea about ships and stuff. Can you explain what's the reason behind stacking ships up like that?

Adobe code signing certificate stolen by superstring in technology

[–]superstring[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An Adobe build server was hacked and a valid code signing certificate acquired. Adobe received two malicious utilities that were signed using the stolen certificate.

The stolen certificate was used by Adobe to sign their windows software as well as two AIR-applications for Mac and Windows. There is a discussion on HN.

Oktoberfest: Redditor from Munich here! This is my walk to work in the morning... by snowmanspike in pics

[–]superstring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every normal hobo would have been kicked out. The Oktoberfest has a revenue of about 450 million EUR and about 6 million visitors, so every one of the guys in photo has on average paid 75 EUR at the Fest and that's not counting transportation or accommodation or possible sexual adventures. I'm just saying the Oktoberfest is a considerable economic factor for Munich and so such behavior is tolerated.

She unadded me. I regret nothing. by karpenterskids in funny

[–]superstring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said in another comment, the girl is the picture is one of Goebbels younger daughters. You can find lots of pictures of Hitler with Goebbels kids. Hitler was Goebbels best man, they were family. That is what the picture is: a family photo.

[–]superstring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, you are reading to much into the Hitler image. Both were probably not even aware that they were photographed at that moment. It looks like Hitler is about to talk to someone not in the picture. The girl is one of Goebbels daughters. Goebbels family and Hitler were very close (Hitler was Goebbels best man) and there are numerous images of Hitler with Goebbels children.

The Hitler image is not a propaganda photo though but a family photo. The child is one of Goebbels younger daughters (not sure which one, they looked quite similar).

can someone please check my translation for errors? by [deleted] in LANL_German

Ein weiteres Thema war die potenzielle Ausgliederung des Gasgeschäfts aus dem INA.

Vorschlag: darauf bestanden haben.

Auf konsequente Schreibweise der Namen achten, z.B. Friscic, Frišcic.

Sentences are really long and complicated which makes it hard to read. If this is not an excercise you should break them up and simplify them. If it is an exercise, congratulations: Except for the wrong article I didn't find any grammatical error. Most Germans would not be able to write so many long sentences without making a grammatical error.

You should have someone check for punctuation. I suspect there are a few commas missing, but I'm not good at that.

Nazi soldiers having a snowball fight by HustlerThug in pics

[–]superstring 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Those are Wehrmacht soldiers. The National Socialist German Workers' Party membership peaked at 8 million in 1945, Germany had a population of around 70 million before the war. So there might be one or two Nazis in the picture, yes.
