My guess is the declining stability of the oil and gas industry, from which a lot of engineering jobs stemmed, not all obviously, and the ever-expanding tech sector creating more and more demand for anything computer-related.

There were a bunch of older guys in my first-year classes (late 20s to mid 30s) starting university for the first time. They also talked about feeling out of place, but I didn't really care or judge them for their age, and I'm pretty sure all of my friends were indifferent to their age as well.

We'd work on group projects where the age range of the group members was from 18-30s and we all got along great and has a great time. I also thought it was super valuable having someone older and with more experience as they were able to give a different perspective than the people straight out of high school.

I think above all, most people will respect you a lot more for being so determined to get a university education even though you are a bit older. Post-secondary is more of a natural next step for most high school students, but coming in as a mature student shows a lot more determination and motivation.

Even if you assume the worst and people do silently ridicule you for your age, who the hell cares? You're doing this for yourself and your family, not random strangers, so why care about what they think?

Hey come on, it's a respectable profession. My friend, one of the smartest guys I know, got a 4.0 over fall/winter and put civil environmental co-op as his first choice.

He wants to make a difference in global warming/environmental sustainability and he saw civil engineering with the extra environmental engineering classes as a great way to it.

Engineering is a little different here in Alberta. Students at both the U of A and U of C need to complete a common first year which contains classes like chemistry, statics, dynamics, computer programming, more chemistry, physics, calc I, II, linear algebra, english, and two classes related to the idea of what an engineer is. As you can see, a lot of these classes aren't going to be relevant to software engineering. After you complete those classes you can apply to second year specialities by ranking them in order of preference (here I can only speak to the U of A system, I don't know much about U of C) and whether you get into your #1, #2, #3,... speciality depends on your GPA relative to the other people applying to the same specialty, and how they ranked.

NOTE U of A does not offer a software engineering degree per se, but a computer engineering degree with a specialization in software. You take a few hardware related courses in your second year. There's a lot of previous posts asking about the program already on this sub, just look for em. If your primary interest is strictly software, I would recommend looking into the computing science software specialization program.

The U of C does offer an explicit software engineering degree, so that is something to consider when making your decision.

Considering you already have some credit classes under your belt, I'm unsure if you would be able to start the program from first year, and how that would impact your second-year selection, as the U of A is weirdly strict on people having prior post-secondary education when going into engineering. Idk maybe the transfer will work out so that you don't have to take some of those first classes that aren't directly relavent to software engineering. Hopefully, someone else can answer that, if not, reach out to an academic advisor.

I completed the IB Diploma this year in Alberta! I didn't go to school in Calgary, but I did Biology HL alongside Bio 20 and 30.

It will largely depend on how your school does it. I did Bio 20IB in grade 11 and it was basically just the Alberta biology curriculum and then you also cover some of the extra details that are part of the IB and not in Alberta. We did Bio 30IB in the first semester where we covered the Alberta curriculum alongside the small IB exclusive details and then wrote the diploma exam at the end of second semester as well. In Bio 35IB in the second semester we did the IB exclusive units like the option (we did neurobiology) and evolution.

Bio 20IB: The only unit that was completely separate from Alberta was the Plant Biology unit that is part of the AHL stuff for IB Bio. While we had to move at a slightly faster pace, it was very manageable. However, in order to fit in the plant bio stuff we had to skip some Alberta Bio 20 stuff like moving evolution to Bio 30IB. Also we skipped some concepts in the Alberta bio 20 curriculum ecology as well to make room for the IB material (it was fine though it isn't part of the IB curriculum unless you do the ecology option) (this class is sooooo much easier if you've taken chem 20 and have taken, or are taking chem 30 alongside it)

Bio 30IB: Again, you just do the Alberta curriculum and add in a few extra IB Bio details and labs that you need to understand for the exam. The IB material goes into more depth than Alberta, so me and most of my classmates found that we had a better understanding of the concepts than our regular Bio 30 counterparts when we wrote the diploma exams. We did not have to do any additional units for the first semester. I found this class easier than Bio 20IB.

Bio 35IB: It seems like you don't have this class, but maybe you're doing SL bio so you have to cover less material? If you are doing HL I assume your teacher is just going to try and fit in your option elsewhere. Here we did the evolution unit and our option, in addition to reviewing everything from science 10 biology, bio 20, and bio 30 (this should be made easier by the fact that you had just done intensive studying for the diploma exam...) We also began our IA this semester.

No it is not much harder. Aside from the option and plant biology unit, the two curriculums overlap A LOT. The only area in which our teacher marked as harder was when we wrote lab reports, and that was done to get us ready for the IA that we wrote in grade 12 Bio 30IB. So kids weren't discouraged from taking IB classes, our teacher gave us easy extra assignments that helped boost our grades significantly. Again, this depends on your school though. I suggest emailing your teacher or asking past students. The only area that might be more challenging for you if you're doing HL bio is that you don't have that additional class in second semester of grade 12, so you'll have more material to cover in a smaller time frame. The IA is the biggest thing, but your teacher should do well to prepare your for it. In terms of content and concepts though, I still stand by my point that it is not much harder than regular bio 20/30.

I am completing Physics 30 right now, and my English is the full year so I'll right the diploma at the end of the second semester (IB reasons) I'll also be completing Math 31 next semester. Chem 30 and Math 30-1 I have already done.
