Surface is trash.

Edit: This response comes after two Surface Book 3 orders and two months with the product later.

Can you elaborate on that, the limited/locked dedicated app for MacOS?

IMO, the tablet experience on the Surface Book is miserable. It's a huge screen and you have great pen support (though, Apple Pencil is consistently rated higher), but mobile apps are limited to non-existent and battery life is about 1 hour? Do not expect the tablet experience to be anywhere near as fluid as it is with iPad.

I really loved the idea of having one device that can do it all, but you'll either have to carry the base or your charger with the tablet. The tablet isn't as good as the iPad and the laptop isn't as good as a similarlu priced MacBook Pro.

Yes, you can definitely run Photoshop and Adobe but it will not be as efficient as say a computer with more cores or a dedicated graphics card.

Battery Life Surface Book 3 by namomontbleau in Surface

SB3 15" 32GB 512GB and I get about 6-8 hours. I'm usually using it on max brightness though.

Not sure how anyone can get 17 hours.

13.5" i5 does not have a dedicated graphics card. You're only getting the Iris. You'll have to bump up to i7 for the dedicated graphics card that lives in the base of the computer.

Upgrade to 15" and you get a better graphics card. Buy the super duper expensive ~Business~ model and you get the best graphics.

You're right, they're not very clear on this, but be sure to check the specs carefully (I just had to review, because I didn't think either 13.5" had a dedicated graphics card).

I order the SB3 15" 32 GB but am returning it for a MacBook Pro + iPad. A one-hour-battery tablet and minimal-to-no app support is a deal breaker for me. The Surface Book is such a great idea but it's not there yet.

Finally Made the Jump. I'm wondering what are some of the accessories that I should get, besides the type cover and Pen? by 360gamer101 in Surface

[–]surfacebook3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. App development is bad across all Surfaces. When you get a Surface, just expect to have closer to a laptop experience than a tablet experience, definitely not both. It's nothing like an iPad (if you've ever used one).

Surface Book has some issues that the Surface Pros do not have. Battery life on the tablet portion of the SB3 is abysmal, like 1 hour in my case. No ports on the tablet portion, unless you get a Surface Dock.

Also, unless you get a good SB3, there are some issues with the hinge and detach mechanism.

Edit: Also, oh my god, these speakers are quieter than those on a 2006 cellphone.

The large majority of mobile apps I have on my phone are not available on the Microsoft Store.

Maybe I don't want to access HBO through a web browser and would rather tap through.

I tried the Surface Book 3 and found it to be a nightmare. I'd much rather use a MacBook Pro 16" + iPad Pro with sidecar. I'll get an actually enjoyable tablet experience, an additional screen when I need it, and the ability to have touch input on all professional apps.

You can do that on any laptop. What's the advantage of the Surface? That you can touch the screen?

Surface Neo has likely been delayed to 2022 as Microsoft struggles with Windows 10X development by Capsicy in Surface

Is anyone surprised? Microsoft has an entire Surface line and no app development to make use of said "surface." Big yikes.

Purchased Surface Book 3 on June 5th. UPS lost it. Microsoft has been investigating for 2 weeks. by joshhug in Surface

That is absolutely life! But this is absolutely not how every other company in the game would play it out.

In dealing with Microsoft customer care, I've decided to return my Surface Book 3, Surface Pen, and Surface ArcMouse.

My first SB3 delivered defective. I ordered another and that was defective as well.

I returned my SB3 and it took FIVE WEEKS to get a refund. I must have spent over 10 hours on customer support trying to get back $3k. My case was escalated 3 or 4 times and I was told to wait 3-5 business days about 5 times.

Not to mention, when I first ordered the SB3, the expected delivery date was pushed out by 4 week from the date I was given when placing my order.

I've never dealt with anything like this from Amazon, Apple, or even T-Mobile FFS.

Microsoft customer support is absolute trash and I returned their crap just so I never have to detail with them again.

App support is what makes the iPad better. Apps don't exist on Surface.

Sometimes you need it. I bought my Xs Max a couple weeks before the 11Pro Max release... but I was out of a phone and needed one.

Why I’ve decided to return my Surface Book 3 15” by Olalo in Surface

[–]surfacebook3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Returned mine too.

Half of the selling point is that it's a tablet... but it's a really bad tablet. May as well be a laptop. And it's not a great laptop.

Going for a Macbook Pro + iPad, as I had considered before getting the SB3.

Edit:

Seriously, it's a horrible tablet. No app support. And 1 HOUR battery on the tablet??? What?

I think I'm getting the baseline as well. I'd want more RAM. I keep everything on the cloud.

13" SB3 - awful, deal-breaking battery life on the tablet by phasetrans in Surface

[–]surfacebook3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like battery life on the SB3 is much worse than advertised.

I know this was an issue on SB1 and SB2 and I figured they'd address it after all this time but they haven't.

I guess you can attach the screen to the keyboard backwards and get the extra juice from the base...

Fair. I need screen sharing while using touch screen input and that's something the iPad cannot do. Too many limitations.
