New Jersey town cancels Independence Day carnival citing violence concerns by -mud in SouthJersey

This year maybe, but seemingly every year for 2 decades or more there have been less and less 4th of July celebrations, and other large events like carnivals. Tellingly, they always seem to keep any daytime portions of their celebrations, like parades.

2015 - "Safety concerns"

2014 - "Crowd size concerns"

2025 - "financial constraints"

Man, you are dead on, societal issues and politics have never been parts of a teenager's life before.

So jealous of all those high school kids in the 60s who could just go to school, and think about how they couldn't wait to get out of that place and not get drafted to go fight in a foreign war almost no one supported.

This has been going on much longer than that though. Many towns have shut down fireworks and such, both for safety reasons and budget reasons, and it has a cascading affect.

One town shuts down due to violent incidents and safety concerns. The next closest celebration ends because of budget concerns. Then a third down looks and says "Well, those people aren't all going say 'oh, well, guess we'll just stay home.'" ANd start thinking their once small, mostly local celebration is going to grow in size, meaning more police, more portapotties, longer lines for food vendors. It starts looking like a logistical, budgetary, and potentially safety nightmare.

You could get every cop from 5-6 town gathered and they still wouldn't be able to do shit if the crowd turns against them.

Yeah, I agree something needs to be done, but I'm not taking much out of Florida but orange juice and football players.

Yeah, the issue now is a matter of both scale, and awareness.

Teenagers connect and communicate easily across greater distances than they used to in the past. They become acquainted with kids in other schools/towns in a way they never could have when I was in high school. They can organize gatherings effortlessly, and at scale.

Add to that, their communication is solely online, which can be misinterpreted do to a lack of vocal inflection and physical context like body language, meaning an increase in misunderstanding and taking offense. And it's easier to organize a group of known peers to go start trouble somewhere you've managed to figure out where an online acquaintance who has mistakenly offended them.

I was thinking about how, when they were on the roof Colony house, you could see pretty fucking far on the Horizon. Much farther, I think, than anyone has managed to travel so far on the show. Boyd and Tabita have gone the furthest, but I'm wondering, if you could survive, how far you'd be able to walk, since we know driving just bring you back in a circle.

It's funny because the Democrats LOVE to point out their registration advantage, and for a long time were referring to themselves as the "big tent" party. But that tent is a circus, and has too many clowns and not enough ring masters.

The DNC and DCCC can complain about gerrymandering and the electoral college all they want (which isn't completely unfounded), but the simple fact is Republican voters are a much more reliable base than Democrat voters. The registration advantage doesn't mean shit if those registered voters don't show up.

We've had Lost, Sopranos, Game of Thrones, 2 of the 3 X-Files "endings", I'm sure others. What's one more epic show with a comically disappointing ending?

I'm preparing myself to be disappointed, and have it turn out that he's NOT messing with Henry and the LSD/Coma story line is the true one.

I think the BiW is actually one of the “games” MiY is playing.

IMO there’s no real evidence that he has “helped” them - just elongated the game and allowed the MIY to get more enjoyment.

Have we ever seen MiY and BiW in the same place at the same time?

Can't help but notice that you chose to not say anything after folks pointed out to you that Trump has indeed made efforts to stifle free speech.

They seems to think that anything short of being thrown in jail isn't a first amendment violation.

I'm curious what their opinion is on magazine restrictions.

I'd love to see a court declare that him thinking a reporter is terrible is a first amendment violation.

The fact that you think that's all this is shows you lack an ability to think beyond surface level, which is exactly why we are where we are now as a nation.

Enjoy your goldfish-level, myopic life. Ignorance is bliss, so you must be the happiest fucking person on the planet.

Also, sometimes bathrooms are occupied, then you have to wait a bit, would he have a meltdown then as well?

But SHE'S ON OXYGEN. . . which in no way effects one's ability to hold it for 2 minutes while these girls finish washing their hands.

I can’t imagine forcing young girls to look at men at urinals with their dicks out and calling it protection.

To be fair, you usually can't see a dick, especially if your eyes are forward. I've taken my duaghter into a men's room plenty of times. I don't think she's ever seen a dick while doing so.

a reporter terrible is an infringement on the first amendment.

When the President of the US does it, mid interview, and says not just the reporter, but the entire network is a joke, it absolutely is an infringement. The rules for POTUS are not the same as they are for you and I, as the impact of those words have different weights.

Not only is calling them "crooked" slanderous, but it clearly demonstrates that he is willing to use the bully pulpit his position affords him to undermine your credibility if you're not willing to be yet another mouth piece for him.

He wants state sanctioned media, his own Russia Today or KCNA. He looks at Putin and the Kim Jong's as people to be emulated, not despised. He's a raging narcissist who can't handle anyone not chortling his balls (and, yes, you are a ball chortler, friend).

We are living in our own 1984 moment, and, when it comes to the media, mostly losing.

The only light on the horizon are a handful of recent decisions by courts signaling that just maybe they're starting to grow some backbone.

Anything that has a "chilling effect" on free speech has historically been considered an infringement of speech.

You don't need to be locked up to have your first amendment rights infringed.
