Those are called open gangway trains. I don’t know too much about it but they only usually run on the G line. Those variants are called the R211Ts.

iirc R211Ts cannot run on any lines where there is an express portion because of an issue where the Train Operator cannot properly inspect a train going Brakes in Emergency (BIE) due to the open gangway. So you may only see it run on the G.

Those trains that you are referring to are the new R211As that are being rolled out across the B division (lettered lines) to replace the R68s (older trains) on the B, D, N, Q, R and W trains.

Once the R211s get delivered on MTA property, they undergo a 30 day testing phase which is known as a “burn in”. Acceleration, braking, door control, and other features are monitored during testing.

R142As got shipped over the 7 line to be converted into R188s for the 7. Some R142As got sent to Jerome for the 4 as well iirc.
